FELL 300 FEET.

HIGHWAYS BOARD PARTY. OPOTIKI, Jan. 26. While three cars containing members of the Main Highways Board were travelling between Gisborne and Opotiki, via the now coastal route, last night one car left the road and fell 300 ft. The scene of the accident was a spot near the top of Mnraenui Hill between Motu River and Torere. The ear contained Mr A. J. Baker (assistant engineer-in-chief), Mr Talbot (a member of the board), Mr Thornton (district engineer at Gisborne) and the driver. The car was finally held up by some bushes. At the time of the accident the car was travelling between the two other cars, hut it was not till Torere was reached that the third car was found to he missing. Ambulance gear was secured from the Public Works camp at Torere and the other cars turned back. Mr Thornton was found on the roadside awaiting the return of the cars. The other passengers were still ,at the base of the cliff. Mr Baker was found to be suffering from cuts, bruises, and shock and was brought to the Opotiki Hospital at a late hour, The others had a fortunate escape from injury.
