PAHIATUA RACES. MEETING OPENS*TO-MORROW. REVIEW OF FIELDS. (By “Spoctator.”) Tho Pnhiatua Racing Club’s annual twoday meeting will open to-morrow, and should provide vory interesting racing, particularly tho Cup field. Patrons are assured of a very enjoyable outing, and tho programme willl commence at 12.15 p.m. A review of tho fields for to-morrow is as follows: 12.15 . „ , MAIDEN RACE, of £BO. Six furlongs and 55 yards. Weight 8.5. Royal Portrait Sunder Esperanee Bay Rowana Waterproof Qucxona Freed Mihi Peata Lucky Charm Itapotao Rolling Homo Gay Artist Hastings West Mystery Boy Earlscourt Though there are a number of newcomers in tho maiden field, several of the horses engaged have placed form. Royal Portrait last season had five minor placings in similar company. Sunder has had only two starts this season, having been second to Trcbor in the Pirinoa Stakes at Wairarapa and fifth in tho hurdle ovont at Ashhurst. Gay Artist was third to Mob Rule and Trebor in the Novice Stakes at Wairarapa, and third in the Pirinoa Stakos, these having been her only two starts. Rowana was third to Grand City and Captain Trovillo in the Kiritaki Handicap at Woodville prior to tho holidays, and Hastings West has shown up in her races. Quexona has been unplaced in three starts. Favouritism may be shared by: Rowana, Gay Artist, Sunder. KONINI HACK HANDICAP, of £IOO. Seven furlongs. Nercus 9 0 Lo Toquet 8 2 Mca Mea 8 12 Merryman 7 11 Royal Record 810 Happy Heels 711 State Bank 8 8 Knightsbridgo 7 5 Bluffer 8 3 Toorak 7 5 Sunny Blonde 8 3 Nereus, who won at tho Manawatu meeting and subsequently raced well at Trentham without filling a place, had a consistent record last season. Mea Mea was tho winner of the Tawaha Handicap on the second day at Wairarapa. Royal Record failed badly at Ashhurst; State Bank has no recent form, and Sunny Blonde has failed to win since scoring in a highweighfc at Riccarlon. Blufter hua disappointed in her last few- starts. Lc Toquet won at Trentham, and Merryman carried off a maiden event easily at Manawatu, where Knightsbridgo, after showing promiso at Woodvillo, was unplaced Toorak does- not impress. Iho public may select their favourite from: Ncrcus, Merryman, Lc Toquet.
1.40 — BALLANCE HIGHWEICHT HANDICAP, of £IOO. One mile and 110 yards. Buster Brown 10 13 Puroto 9 0 Bing Boy 10 1 Camilla Horn 9 0 Contact 10 1 Lady Wessex 9 0 Parry 9 9 Twilight Song 9 0 Royal Romance 9 6 Mahutai 9 0 Earl Colossus 9 6 Buster Brown, winner of the Gorge Hack Cup at Ashhurst, must command repeat. Bing Boy won an event of this nature at Marton, but failed in tho Hack Cup at Ashhurst, where Contact was not prominent in the hurdles. Parry was beaten a neck by Buster Brown in the highweight on the first day of the Hawke's Bay fixture, and doad-heated with him on the second day. Royal Romance has failed to reproduce her early spring form. Earl Colossus has done nothing in his last four starts, and apart possibly from Twilight Song the others may make little appeal. Most support may bo forthcoming for: _ Parry, Bing Boy, Buster Brown.
225 — PAHIATUA CUP. of £l7O and trophy. One mile and a quarter.
Lucullus Lad 9 0 Helen Ford 713 Master Cyklon 813 Hunting queen 713 Pukcko 8 6 Pladio 7 10 Limbohm 7 13 Terry ' 4 Lucullus Lad is one of the most improved horses in commission and raced very prominently at Manawatu and Wairarapa, winning at both fixtures. He went a groat race in tho Wellington Cup, and this effort may have told on him on tho final day when he was unplaced over a mile. Master Ckylon won at Manawatu but was unplaced in the Ashhurst Cup. Pukeko has been showing signs ot returning to form. Limbohm, who was second to Legatee in the Park Stakes at Napier last November, but has not since raced, seems to be nicely placed. Helen Ford ran well at Wairarapa, but did not reproduce these efforts at Ashhurst Hunting Queen was very prominent under big weights in the highweights at Manawatu, and may bo dangerous. Pladie, who is a little inconsistent, ran second at Aslitiurst, whero Terry only went under by a nose to Wildfiower in the Cup, and ho has only to reproduce this to be very troublesome to the opposition. The public choice for favourite may rest finally betwon: Lucullus Lad, Terry, Limbohm.
NURSERY HANDICAP, of £IOO. Five furlongs. Hunter’s Eve 8 5 Sogra 7 7 Jeanne 8 4 lwenty Grand 7 7 Diareus 7 8 Lady Melfort 7 5 Hunter’s Eve was the winner of the Bidwill Nursery at Wairarapa. Jeanne has only, twico been unplaced in nine starts, was narrowly beaten half a head by Dunmanway in tho Nursery at Manawatu, and subsequently won the Nursery at Vfaipawa. Diareus has had two races, but has not been placed. This will actually be Segra’s first race, as he threw his rider at tho post at Manawatu and did not race. Twenty Grand lias had several starts for one minor placing, but Lady Melfort .is a new-comer. Best supported may bo: Hunter’s Eve, Jeanne, Lady Melfort. 345 HAMUA HACK HANDICAP, of £IOO. One mile and 110 yards.
Maestro 9 0 Impersonator 713 Agog 8 4 Seyfried 7 10 Naughty Lady Wossex 7 0 Marietta 7 13
Maestro, wiio was unlucky at Ashhurst when he ran second, is not badly placed with top weight. Agog has been racing well of late., having been a winner at both the Waipukurau and Hawke’s Bay meetings, with Seyfried second to her on each occasion. Impersonator won the Hack Cup at Waipukurau. Horses likely to be fancied by backers include: . , Agog, Impersonator, Seyfried.
4 25 MAKURI HACK HANDICAP, of £IOO. Six furlongs and 55 yards. Diamond Cutter 9 0 Joe Louis 7 12 First Chapter 812 Rhodesian 111 Colleen Gain 8 6 Jewish Lad 7 5 Ruling Spy 8 3 Mon Ace 7 5 Happy Heeß 712 Diamond Cutter and First Chapter were both winners during the holidays, but the former, like Colleen Gain, who appears to have lost completely her early spring form, was unplaced at Ashhurst. Happy Heels won a race at Wairarapa in the spring. Joe Louis has shown moderately good form, but was a little unlucky in getting on tho heels of another runner at Ashhurst. Mon Aco had a third placing at Marton. The public’s choice may rest between: , ~ Happy Heels, Joo Louis, Diamond Cutter. EKETAHUNA HANDICAP, of £llO. Seven furlongs.
Pakanui 9 7 Ivahikatoa 7 5 Lone Raider 712 Passion Fruit 75' Mister Quex 7 7 Sunny Blonde 7 0 Pakanui, who won at Manawatu, can be relied upon to run a very solid race, while Lone Raider may be dangerouß over this distance. Though now well dowx in the handicaps, Mister Quex will need to irnprovo. Kahikatoa has no recent form, and is a veteran, but Passion Fruit was finishing on at Ashhurst. Favouritism may rest botween: ' Lorio Raider, Pakanui, Passion Fruit.
