DEFENCE OF AMERICA.

EXPANSION OF FORCES. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE AWAITED NEW YORK, Jan, 26, The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says it is learned that President Roosevelt’s defence message, which is expected to be released to-morrow, will ask for increased expenditures on the army in addition to the navy. The amount for the army is expected to be between 25,000.000 and 50,000,000 dollars for anti-aircraft guns, automatic rifles, bombers, long-range ’planes and increased man-power. It is assumed that the expansion programme is directly due to Japan’s course in China, with the consequent difficulties and serious incidents that the situation has produced for the United States.
