AMERICAN LABOUR.
ACTIVITIES OF LEADER. WASHINGTON, Jan. 26. At the request of Senator Vandenberg, the Commerce and Labour Committees of the Senate have agreed to demand from the Labour Department a full and immediate report on the citizenship and activities of Mr H. Brirlges, the Labour leader, whose name figured in the evidence heard by the committees regarding Pacific Coast disturbances in connection with an investigation into labour conditions in the merchant marine.
A message on January 19 stated: The Mayor of Portland. Oregon, Mr Carson, testifying before the Senate Commerce Committee, expressed annoyance with Mr Harry Bridges, whom he described as an “Australian alien.” Mr Bridges appeared in Portland several times and criticised the city’s government. Mr Carson declared that since Mr Bridges was not an American citizen lie had no right to do so. Labour disorders in the shipping industry had cost Portland 1,000,000,000 dollars during the past three years.
