SALE OF RARE STAMPS.
NEW ZEALAND ISSUES. 'LONDON, Jan. 5. About two dozen rare New Zealand stamps will he offered for auction on February 21 and 22 by 11, 11. Harmer, London stamp auctioneer. All the stamps were issued between 1855 and 1860, and they are expected to realise several hundred pounds. The stamps have an interesting history. In the early days of New Zealand settlement a young man named James Ellman went to the colony as a sheep farmer. He was a grandson of John Ellman, the principal original breeder of Southdown sheep. Janies Ellman imported sheep from Sussex and had considerable success in breeding small-bodied animals suited to New Zealand conditions. He wrote many letters home telling of his progress. and the stamps to be auctioned are from these letters. “The stamps represent one ot tne most interesting finds of New Zealand material in recent years, an English authority said. “They all bear the portrait of Queen Victoria m her Coronation robes, after the original b> A E Chalons, and are considered to be the finest of the early British colonial stamp designs.”
