EggerS (county overseer) submitted the lollowing report covering tlie mouth ended January 19: Main highways.—All sections ol main highways m the county have received frequent attention ii'olll the gradei plants and are in a reasonably fair condition, considering the spell of dry weather and the extraordinary volume of motor traffic during the past few weeks. The earring out of maintenance metal on No. 553 main highway is now in progress. A number of decking planks on the Cheltenham Cross Road bridge, No. 553 main highway, have had to be renewed and further repairs to the decking will be necessary at an early date. f l he work ol constructing a new culvert on No. 52 main highway at Mangarimu is well in hand and should be completed at an early date. In the western section the roadman has been engaged in attending to metal surfaces and the cutting back of overhanging growth, etc., as well as assisting with the surface work and the cleaning out of water-tables and culverts on a section of the AVaituna riding. General.—During the month T have made fairly general inspection of county bridges on roads other _ than main highways and find that in a number of cases minor repairs are necessary, especially the renewal of decking on the bridges over the Iviwitca stream near Mr Bryce’s old homestead on the Ohingaiti-Pembcrton Road. All thg decking will have to be replaced with new timbers, approximately 3000 superficial feet, which has been ordered. I am arranging to renew the running decking planks on bridges on the Pakihikura-Afangnmoko and Ohingaiti-Pembcrton Roads. I have inspected a small bridge on Bryce’s Line and a large timber culvert' on Barrow’s Line, and find that both are in a very unsound condition. I consider that. they should be replaced with fairly large concrete box culveits, as in their present condition tliev are very unsafe for traffic.
