FOXTON BEACH
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Jan. 24
The Tine weather over the week-end was responsible for a particularly large crowd on the beach both on Saturday and Sunday. Fishing launches put out to sea on Sunday morning, but returned somewhat earlier than usual owing to a sou’-wester blowing up. Flounder trawlers did not exporience much success. Flat fish are proving fairly scarce at present. Hundreds of motor cars have used the flax track leading to the ocean beach this season. On Saturday night a car belonging to a Palmerston North resident visiting the resort, became §tuck in the soft sand but a call for assistance soon saw willing helpers on their way. No groat difficulty was experienced in returning the car to the old river bod. In regard to the track, it might be a good idea if the Jsoach Improvement Society could take some steps towards controlling the traffic negotiating this roadway. Generally cars find littio difficulty in passing each, other, as the rise by the Surf Club pavilion gives a fairly good view and enables drivers to select suitable passing places. The main trouble, however, is that some drivers refuse to go beyond the flax on reaching the firm sand, or else turn their vehicles
and return to park actually on the roadway itself. This is particularly the case when good tides are experienced on the | beach and congestion quickly occurs. Mrs T. Dailey and family, of Palmerston I North, are staying with Mrs J. S. HornI blow on the waterfront.
1 A community sing and concert was given by Mr J. Selwyn’s entertainers at the i beach on Saturday evening. The effort which was organised by the Surf Club proved to be very popular with the crowd present, estimated at between 800 and 1000. A large motor truck carrying a piano was I an excellent stage for the various artists. | At a suitable juncture Mr M. Perreau and , Mr Selwyn made an appeal for funds for ' the Surf' Club which resulted in a collection of £l6. Mr Selwyn offered to mako j his donation £l if someone else would give a similar amount. This was promptly : taken up by Mr R. Hcppner, of Foxton. A s'milar appeal brought £1 from Mr Christenson, of Oroua Downs, and Mr White, of Palmerston North. A dance wns organised in the Reach Hall after the concert and attracted a largo attendance. The takings were £6
