ARCTIC EPIC

PRIEST’S HEROIC JOURNEY. ON MISSION OF MERCY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 25, 1.30 p.m. TORONTO, Jan. 24. An epic story is told of a Catholic priest’s 115-mile trip dragging a sleigh with a critically ill Indian from the Arctic. A fortnight before an Indian staggered into the Übans Mission, where he announced that George Mechant had severed a foot with an axe and was lying 115 miles away in the direction of the Arctic. Father Lavoie and three Indians started with dog sleds, but the snow was too soft and Father Lavoie went alone on snowshoes. In places he sank four feet. After eight days he reached the wigwam; Mediant was comatose and gnngrene had set in. For fourteen days his only food had been flour and a rabbit.

Father Lavoie fought his way back oyer the trails, dragging Mochant on his sleigh. On arrival at the mission, Mechant’s leg was amputated by Sister Marie, the “White Angel of the North.”
