Lisbon recently celebrated the seven hundred and ninetieth anniversary of the first co-operation of the English with the Portuguese against a common foe—the capture of Lisbon from the Moors. In this operation Afonso Heriques, first King of Portugal, was greatly assisted by English crusaders, a number of whom later settled in Portugal. The citadel then captured is to-day known as tho Castle of Saint George.
