RIVERS IN FLOOD.
HAWKE’S BAY RAINS. Per Press Association. NAPIER, Jan. 25. All rivers are in high flood. The new river control scheme is succeeding in bolding the waters, but inland from the main road, where the scheme is not complete, the Ngarnroro has overflower its banks in the fruit-growing area, where the flood is rising rapidly aa.nd threatening much fertile land. _ Some orcha.rdists have vacated thenproperties where the gale uprooted some trees. . The rainfall was exceptionally severe overnight, the falls totalling four inches tit- Napier,- ten in tho Esk . ~ lev, eleven at Mavaekakaho and thirteen at Maraetotara. Later reports state that the damage to the fruit crops is not very great. Telephone communication with the country areas is disrupted and in some parts the electricity is cut off. The water is feet deep on the Pakowhai Road in the Poplar Avenue, and the Ngarnroro River at the Pakowhai bridge is still rising. Some retailers on the west side ot Heretaunga Street suffered through last night’s downpour, shops being flooded to the depth of a foot in some cases through the influx of water from the streets and backyards. Private and public gardens also suffered through the high wind. IN PAHIATUA DISTRICT. Per Press Association. PAHIATUA. Jan. 25. Although the Palliate a district stood the drought better than most parts, tho rain which bega.n on Sunday evening and continued yesterday unabated lias afforded relief to pastures. Since it began a total of 9.7 inches have fallen. The temperature on Friday was oo degrees and yesterday dropped to 63.4. A bitterly cold gale is blowing to-day and it is reminiscent of winter.
