EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 25, 1908. The Kairanga County Council had advertised: “Owing to fire the Afa’ipwatu Gorge is still unsafe for traffic.” Over 8830 assisted emigrants had left England for New Zealand in the three years ended 1907. These had included 656 female servants. No fewer than 3334 applications had been refused. An interesting feat in wireless telegraphy had been contemplated during the passage of the vessels of the naval squadron between Wellington and Sydney. It bad been intended to connect New Zealand with Australia by means of the Powerful on the passage across, the Cambrian outside Sydney, and the Psvche in Port Jackson. It had been stated that the success of the experiment depended upon the weather. Mr J. Vigor Brown, Mayor of Napier, lvad been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Napier seat at the general election. At the annual meeting of the Palmerston North Orchestral Society Mr Maurice Cohen had been re-elected conductor. Much interest had been displayed An Invercargill cycle dealer, Mr R. Murie, had built a balloon and had filled it with coal gas. His first trial ascent had not been very successful. There had been a land hunger sweeping New Zealand. Another 36,000 acres had been opened for settlement in the Hauraki district.
