SIEGMUND’S SUCCESS.
RACING AT TRENTHAM. MISHNA WINS ACAIN. WELLINGTON. Jan. 24. Tho Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting concluded on Saturday with another largo attendance. The tbtalisator figures for tho day were £83,004, compared with £69.233 10s for the third day last year, a Saturday, and £76,291 for the Anniversary Day. The total for the meeting was £174,272, compared with £188,826, a decrease of £14,654. The track was again in excellent order and fast, and in thi* connection a largely signed testimonial from the visiting trainers was presented to the president. It thanked the course superintendent for the excellent state of the going under conditions that, with less work expended on the track, would have seen the ground like concrete. The Manawatu was again well to the fore. Conveyor securing an excellent win in tho Wallaceville Ilighweight Handicap. Aureus won the Waitokc Hack Handicap by a narrow margin, while Siegmund, Haughty Winner and Ben Braggio carried o/T the honours in the major events. RACING IN DETAIL WALLACEVILLE II lOIIWE IGII T HANDICAP, of £300; second £6O, third £3O. One mile and a-quarter. 8-8 Mr E. L. Barnes’s, blk g CONVEYOR (Tractor—Prima Lux), 6yrs, 9.2 (A. McDonald) 1 2- Mr C. Holdsworth’s b g STUDLEY ROYAL, 4yrs„ 9.9 (C. P. Sheild) 2 3- Air A. W. Meiklo’s ch in CHARADE, syrs, 9.13 (A. Jenkins) 3 Also started: 1-1 Iluskio 10.9, 7-7 The Surgeon 10.7, 5 6 Round Score 10.6, 4-3 Lustral 9.8, 6-5 Convivial 8.5, 10-10 Southern Blood 9.3, 9-9 Twilight Song 9.0. Two lengths and a-half; half a length. Huskie was fourth. Time, 2-104-Once more backers failed to clear the Highweight hurdle, and tho winner, Conveyor, was only eighth choice in a field of ten. Ilia win, however, was clear cut; in fact he galloped over everything at the right end. He was not fancied by his connections, cither, as he had let them down with a poor showing on the first day. On Saturday, howover, he was bet ter drawn, and got a good run. Studley Royal also finished fairly well from the hack of tho field to run second, and Charade cut out the favourite, Iluskie, on tho post for third money.' Iluskie was very sore ana unable to do himself justice HOPEFUL STAKES HANDICAP, of £400; second £BO, third £4O. For two-year-olds.' Five furlongs. 1-1 Air F. Ormond's b g IVAR (Beau Pore—High Art) 8.6 (B. 11. Alor-
rio) 1 2- Air T. Impev’s br c ARVAKUR, 8.4 (H. N. Wiggins) 2 3- Air O. I l ’. Watson’s eh c RAEBURN, car 7.104 (L. J. Ellis) ... Z Also started: 4-3 On Call 8.2, 1-1 Kaihbclla 8.0, bracketed with Ivor, 5-5 Sudan 7.8, 8-8 Yours Truly ear 7.8, 7-7 Dissipation car 7.7, 6-6 Eastern Heir 7.0. A head; a length and a half. Kathbellc was fourth. Time, 594scc. Kathbclla endeavoured to repeat hot performance of the first day, but she never got far away from On Call, Arvakur and Ivar, and in the run home Ivar and Arvakur drew out, the former just prevailing. Ivar put up an improved and solid effort, but tho probability is that Arvakur would have won but for [jutting in a had stumble at the false rail. Raeburn finished solidly from the rear of the field for his third anil should improve. First, second and fourth horses are all by Beau Pore. MELROSE HACK HANDICAP, of £300:
second £6O. third £3O. Seven furlongs. 5-8 Air I. Lupton’e b g PEKOE (Kiosk —Courtship) 3yrs, 8.0 (C. P. Sheild) ... "... I 9-6 Mrs B. H. Edkins’s 1> f ACCOMPLICE, 3yrs, 3.8 (W. J. Broughton) ... 2 1-1 Mrs H. B. Douglas’s b f AIULATTO. 3yrs, 8.2 (L. J. Ellis) 3 Also started: 8-9 Double Gift 9.8, 6-7 Alloa 8.13, 7-5 Rabble 8.10. 2-2 Rockingham 8.5, 10-10 Ixivolilt 8.3, 4-4 Sam's Choice 8.3, 3-3 Tliala 8.3, 10-11 Amatory 8.0. 12-12 Gay Artist 8.0. Half a length; a length. Rockingham was fourth. Time, 1.273. Tho moderately backed Pekoe showed improvement to win all the way and stall off a strong challenge by Accomplice, who has improved and ran consistently at the meeting. Alulatto and Rockingham both finished very fast at the end to take third and fourth after slow beginnings. This is not unusual with Rockingham, who has developed a habit now of arriving too late, but Mulatto was undoubtedly unlucky for she drew 1, and was soon back to last.
SUALMER. HANDICAP, of £750; second £l5O, third £75. One mile and a quarter 2-4 Air F. Kottlewell’s b g SIEGAIUND (Siegfried—Lilimond), 4yrs, ear 7.13
(W. J Broughton) ... 1 5-3 Air T. Impcy’s br g ROUND UP, 5 yrs, 8.3 (H. N. Wiggins) 2 8-8 Mr O. Nelson’s b g HUNTING CAT, 6yrs, car 7.74 (S. Wilson) ... 3 Also started: 6-7 Wild Chase 8.12, 3-2 Catalogue 8.11, 4-5 Oratory 8.6, 1-1 Dictate 3.3, 7-6 Tiger Gain 8.3. A length: two lengths. Tiger Gain was fourth. Time, 2.5. Siogmund swept along in the straight with giant strides and buried tho opposition. Hunting Cat and Round Up flattered their supporters in tho straight after tho collapse of the loaders, Oratory and Dictate, and Round Up got the supper hand of Hunfing Cat, but his triumph was very brief once Sicgmund got dovyn to real business. It was, however, Round Up’s host showing at the meeting, and had he not gone sore it is likely that he would hnvo shown the real merit of his Auckland form. Catalogue was well placed throughout and looked likely in the straight, but he failed to run on. Oratory and Dictate ran each other to a finish out in front. Wild Chase was prominent for a mile and then fell back to finish last. KAITOKE HACK HANDICAP, of £300; second £6O; third £3O. Six furlongs.
4-4 Mr AI. Alillar’s b f AUREUS (Gascony—Aureate), 3yrs, 8.13 (W. J. Broughton) 1 1-1 Air J. A. Brown’s b g LORD NUFFIELD, 3yrs, 8.12 (L. J. El-
lis) 2 5-5 Air H. F. Wood’s bv g CON’yERSION, s,vrs, 7.4 (11. N. Wiggins) ... 3 Also started; 2-3 Norcus 8.7, 2-2 Vadanoo 8.5. 6-6 First Chapter 8.1. 7-7 Sun-, beam 7.7, 8-8 Amoroso 7.2, 9-9 Great Quex 7 0.
Half a length; a neck. Ncrous was fourth. Time. 1.124. Backers were again caught unawares with Aureus winning practically all the way. In her only previous start at thp meeting sho had been one of the first beaten. She is a speedy mare who will probably come more solid with ago. The favourite. Lord Nuffield, was unlucky. He held a good early position, bill .received a check and fell back. He challenged strongly in the run home, but was unable to make up tho lost ground. Conversion and Ncrous ran fair races, hut after Lord Nuffield had got sent back it always looked like Aureus.
THORXDON HANDICAP, of £400: second £BO, third £4O. One mile. 7- Sir Chas. Clifford’s eh c HAUGHTY WINNER (Winning Hit—Disdain, ful). 3 yrs, 7.10 (A. C. Alcsservy) 1 8- Air L. il. Collinson’s b g OLD SURREY, 4yrs, 7.9 (W. Little) 2 3- Air F. Armstrong’s b c FRANCIS DRAKE, 3yrs, 8.9 (P. Atkins) ... 3 " Also started; 5-5 Taitotu 9.5, 2-2 Lucullus Lad 8.9, 4-3 Valamito 8.6, 6-6 Dcbham 8.0, 1-1 Roaming 8.0. A head; a length. Roaming was fourth. Time, 1.39. The win of tho thrce-ycar-old Haughty Winner was well deserved. Squeezed back to last at the start, lie romained there till the straight, when, just as Old Surrey was coming through to beat the tiring .Francis Drake, he forged ahead with a brilliant run and kept his head in front. Old Surrey hung on grimly and was a trifle unlucky that the winner ran in under pressure. Roaming was favourite, but lie had every chance to do better than his fourth. CITY HANDICAP, of £500; second £IOO, third £SO. Six furlongs. 4- Mr G. Gunn’s br g BEN BRAGGIE (Gascony—Valley Rose), syrs, 9.3 (W. J, Broughton) ’ *
2-2 Mr C. Ryan’s br f BRUNHILD, 3yrs, 7.12 (S. Wilson) 2 5-5 Mr A. Southey’s b m LADY IN A. aged, 8.6 (B. 11. Morris) 3 Also started : 1-1 Triune 8.4. 6-7 Top Row 7.12, 6-6 Pakanui car. 7.12. 3-3 Laughing Loss 7.9. A length'; half a head. Top Row was fourth. Time, 1.12.),. Still another improver came to light, Ben Braggie running on much more solidly at the end than in his previous start. Always prominent, he was cased slightly in the middle stages, and so was able to stall o(I a strongo challenge by Brunhild and Lady Ina, both of whom showed gcoil form at the meeting. Triune was favourite on the strength of t>oing ridden by L. J. Ellis, but he lacked (lush. He lost a little ground at thp start through his usual behaviour. Top Row ran a creditable race, but his previous two races had taken the edge off him. KELBURN HACK HANDICAP. of £300; second £6O and third £3O. One mile. 9-9 Mr C. G. Watson’s ch h MISHNA (Rabbi —Conviction), 4yrs, 8.10 (A. Messervy) 1 8-8 Mr T. K. Coates’s b g ROY BIJN. 4yrs, ear. 7.2 (M. Caddy) 2 2-2 Mrs M. J. Irving’s SAT.TENT KNIGHT, syrs, 8.10 (A. E. Ellis) ... 3 Also started: 1-1 Silvor River 9.0, 55 Cricket 8.13, 4-3 Good Sun 8.10, 3-4 Lady Montana 8.1, 10-10 Night Dress 8.1. 11-11 Lustral 7.9, 7-7 Lo Toquet car. 7.10|, 6-6 Royal Choice car. 7.7. 12-12 llaile Selassie car. 7.4. A long head each way. Royal Choice was fourth. Time, 1.39 j. The last race was not only remarkable for the success of Mishnn, again at a good price, but for the extraordinary way tho outlook changed in the straight. Right up to the last half furlong Mishna never entered into calculations, but he came briliantly at the last to snatch victory in a thrilling finish.
