ASHHURST MEETING.
CUP TO WILDFLOWER. GREAT HOPE’S SPRINT. BUSTER BROWN SURPRISES. (By “Spectator.”; Close finishes in most instances marked an excellent day’s racing at tho Ashliurst-Pohangina Club’s summer meeting on Saturday. There was a very large attendance, the totalisator handling £17.325 10s, compared with £13.689 for the corresponding fixture last year, an increase of £3636 10s. 'With the track very fast, some smart times were recorded, notably that of Great Hope who, emerging for tho first time from hack ranks, easily won the open sprint in 1.12 4-5. Wildfiower, whose record this season has been more consistent than that of any other horse on the circuit, carried off the Ashhurst Cup by a bare_ nose from Terry, who was on the minimum handicap,. and was favoured by the turning course. The Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup was won narrowly by Buster Brown, who paid the best dividend of the day. The Ashhurst Cup was presented to the own-er of Wildfiower bv the president of the club (Mr R. MacDonald), and tho Gorge Hack Cup to the owner of Buster Brown by Mr .T. Hodgens. M.P.. congratulations being extended to the owners, trainers and ridel's of th" successful horses. The meeting was a very popular one, and the greatest hospitality was shown bv the club to its 'visitors. _ _ 'The following are the descriptions pi races additional to those appearing in the first edition of the “Standard on Saturday:— CUP WON BY A NOSE. Piloted by the Awapuni apprentice. J. Chaplin, who had steered her to victory in the Aldworth Stakes at Marton, the favourite, 1\ ildflower, just got home by a bare nose in a great finish to win the Ashhurst Cup. She had the benefit of a 71b. allowance. Master Cyklon and Helen Ford were the early leaders, with Wildfiower well back and Terry tailing the field. PI a die moved up to take charge from Master Cyklon half a mile from home, where Wildfiower, Boomerang and Alby were running next. Wildfiower hit the front at the foot of the straight, with Boomerang in behind her. Terry came up with a rush and a great finish ensued when Alby joined issue on the outside. Wildfiower lasted just long enough to hold off the fast-finishing Terry, with Alby, who was finishing on, only a short neck awav. Boomerang went a fair race to fill fourth place, with Helen lord, Master Cyklon and Pladie next. Last year’s winner, Grand Jury, was nevei in the picture. NOVICE WON BY CLOAK.
Finishing very resolutely, the Vaals filly Cloak, after a number of disappointments, scored her first race success in the Novice Stakes, after heading off the tiring favourite, blam, 50 yards from the post. Slam. Aria, Holme Fell and Royal Tinge made the early running, with Cloak in behind them, but on approaching the straight Cloak was taken up quickly to third place, while Ihon also made a forward move. When the field straightened un Cloak ' came through to challenge the leader and beat him decisively by two lengths. Slam tired badly at the finish and had to be ridden right out to hold off Royal Tinge. Ilion finished fourth, followed by Aria, who faded out very quickly in tho run home. Vintner was next.
BUSTER BROWN’S SURPRISE. Buster Brown, who won at Hastings during the holidays, brought off a big surprise to return a double-figure dividend when lie got homo very narrowly in tho Siberia Hack Handicap after going up very fast to take charge halt a furlong from home. Ho had a 71b allowance for his apprentice rider. There was a lengthy delay in getting the field of 14 runners away. Diamond Gutter was the leader to the turn for home, hut then faded out. Bias, Joe Louis and Maestro were all handy when Buster Brown was rushed to the front, with Ilias moving up. There was a great race over the last two furlongs. but Buster Brown lasted long enough to lie boat Maestro, who came through on the inside, by a neck, with Galteemore, who had finished fast, another nock away.’Bias was right up fourth, with Ohanga and Aurora’s Love next. Race Bov and Bing Boy both ran fair races, but Clavcrcourt was left at tho post. FREE GOLD PREVAILS.
Free Gold, after running well at Trentham, carried off tho Siberia Hack Handicap by a neck in a very close finish, the distance being just to her liking. Tommy Atkins led to the turn from home from Slam, Sardius, and Colleen Gain, . with Lifeguard handy. Slam
temporarily took charge, but then Free Gold moved up rapidly to challenge the leader and, lialf-wa.y down the straight. Son and Heir started to come through'. This pair wore down the pacemaker, hut there were only heads between the trio at the finish. Lifeguard was fourth, Tommy Atkins having weakened into fifth place. Saidius, who was a strong favourite, and Colleen Gain were prominent m tlie early running. Copy Cat was never prominent. Huntino and Royal toy Were slow away. LAST EVENT TO FAVOURITE. Notium, who had run well in an earlier engagement during the day, tried to win the Raumai Handicap from end to end, but Red Sand came with a determined run to head him off at the distance and win by threequarters of a length. Red Sand thus scored at her first start in open comPa ßed Sand temporarily headed off Notium soon after the start, but Notium again took charge and led into the straight, only for Red Sand, who came again. to heat her by threewas chopped out at the start, finished quarters of a length. Golden Chest, who well in third place a similar distance away after colliding with Mister Quex shortly after the start. Royal Record ran ‘badly. Just before reaching the post Red Sand broke a stirrup leather, and her apprentice rider, Sargent, sustained a fall by the six furlong post at the conclusion of the race. He was shaken hut otherwise unhurt, and brought back in the ambulance, later being able to weigh out correctly. RACING IN DETAIL. I-lACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £l4O. Second horse £25 and third £ls.
