DR. HAMMOND’S VISIT.

ARRANGEMENTS IN HAND. FARMERS’ INTEREST. Specially engaged by the Government of the Argentine last year to visit that country and advise on meat quality, Dr. J. Hammond, M.A., D.Sc., F.R.S.. who is now touring New Zealand, is to visit this district shortly and the occasion offers an opportunity never before presented to farmers of this area for hearing from one of the highest authorities at Home just what is required in the meat industry. Dr. Hammond is one of England’s foremost meat quality experts. , . Further arrangements for the visit of Dr. Hammond -were made at a meeting in Palmerston North at which there were present Mr J. A. Russell (in the chair), Professor Riddet and Messrs B. E- Kciiier, W. J. Grouchei, H. R. Thurston, E. P. Nielsen, H J, McLeavey, H. R. Denize, G. M. Whiteloek, L. I. Plimmer and lv. b. GLendinning (secretary). An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr L. B. Wall. Professor Riddet reported that Hr. Hammond’s itinerary, as the speaker knew it, was as follows: —Sunday, January 30, with Mr T. A. Duncan at Huntervillc; Monday, January 31, inspection of farms en route from .Huntervillo to Feikling anti in district; Tuesday, February 1, attend Feilding A. and P. Show; Wednesday, February 2, farm inspections, etc.; Thursday, February 3, suggested day for examination and judging ot Royal Show pig export classes with a public address in the evening; Friday. February 4, nothing definite arranged; baturdav, February 5, leave for Nelson. Professor Riddet further reported that Dr Hammond was one ot the world’s loading experts on .meat quality and that the opportunity ot obtaining first-hand information oil pork, bacon, mutton, lamb and beet quality meats should not be lost, hv fnrmeis in this area. The pork pigs would bo judged on the Peterborough system (asUsed in England), and the bacon pigs would he cut up and examined in exactly the same manner as would he done 'if the judging were being done at Smitlifield in England. Ihe pnhli’c lecture and demonstration would cover a variety of subjects upon which Dr Hammond is a specialist. 1 rofessor Riddet then intimated that the venue of the public lecture could he the Massey College central hall, as it could cope with a large audience and would provide facilities for exhibiting tlic do monstration carcases. The offer of the use ol the Massey College hull for the demonstration and lecture was accepted with thanks. It was decided that the examination and judging of the export pork and bacon classes take place on the same dav as the lecture. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Kedier and Whiteloek, to arrange for the carcase examination and judging to take place in the produce hall of the Manawatu A. and P. Association and that a demonstration on the carcases by Dr. Hammond he arranged. It was resolved that the demonstration he open to the public, but that special invitations to attend be issued to the exhibitors in the pork and bacon j classes, and representatives ol the local branch of the Fanners’ Union, the Young Fanners* Clubs, the rip; Clubs (per medium of the District Council). Messrs Phillips, of the Pig Marketing Association, J. Tietgens, and J. T. Rogerson, ot the National Mortgage Agency Co., Ltd. Messrs Nielsen, Croucher and Stevens were elected as special assistants for the demonstration. It was also decided to arrange a luncheon for Dr. Hammond at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame s, Ltd. ’lt was estimated that there would he approximately 25 present at the luncheon. The meeting decided, in addition, to write the Minister of Agnculture (Hon. AY. Lee Martin) to act as chairman of the evening meeting and. failing his acceptance, to offer tlie position to the president of the Roy-ai Agricultural Society. Mr Croucher yvas appointed publicity officer.
