SURF CONTESTS.

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 23. The New Zealand surf championships concluded at New Brighton today in miserable leather with steady south-west rain. Teams from 10 elute competed, and honours were very evenly distributed. North Island teams were at an advantage in the light surf. The Canterbury teams, who are more accustomed to heavy surf, lost ground on the straight swimming. The principal event, the Nelson Shield, for rescue and resuscitation, was won h.y St. Clair, Dunedin. New Brighton had a substantial lead on time, but lost it on resuscitation. The beltman’s cliampionshipu was keenly contested by J. C. Blakeley and A. T. Dalton (North Beach). Dalton, who has held the title for the last tw.o years, broke away to a lead of five yards on the run in to the water, but Blakeley, sprinting fast over the final stages, overtook him and touched the buoy with 3-ssec. to spare. Blakeley won the championship eight years ago. Results:
