MANUFACTURE OF MUNITIONS
FACTORY IN PRETORIA. PRETORIA, Jan. 22. The Minister of Defence (Mr 0, Pirow), in a speech at a Burgher Commandants’ conference, announced that the Government was erecting a factory for tho large-scale manufacture of heavy guns, tanks, armoured cars, and bombs in Pretoria.
It will initially manufacture lorries, but will be convertible for the manufacture of war material in the event of hostilities. It has also been arranged for private firms to supplement supplies of bombs, shells, and ammunition.
The Government is completing plans for a great force of fighting ’planes and transport ’planes to supply the Bushveld brigade in the northern deserts.
Mr Pirow added that South Africa had no agreement with Portugal, but could not allow a nation to occupy Lorenzo Marques within bombing distance of _ the Union’s gold mines and ammunition factories.
