SEVERE SHAKE
HAWAII ROCKED. I THREE SHARP SHOCKS. STAMPEDE FROM THEATRE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 24, 8.5 a.m. HONOLULU, Jan. 23. A strong earthquake of two minutes’ duration was felt to-day extensively in Waikiki. The crowds stampeded from a Waikiki theatre, which was- rooked violently. People also rushed from stores and building in the town as the earthquake gradually increased in volume.
The telephone service was partially disrupted, but no serious damage was done.
There were three sharp shocks accompanied by a blinding flash which lit up the sky for 20 miles. Kauai Island, also in the Hawaiian Islands, felt two shocks simultaneously. A most severe earthquake was reported from Hilo. The official in charge of the University of Hawaii seismograph reported that all the instruments were shattered.
It is also reported from Maui that the stores there have been damaged.
