THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 24, 1903.

At a conference of the British Labour Party, Mr Ramsay MacDonald had repudiated, in no uncertain terms, the statement that Socialism was antagonistic to the family organisation and to religion.

There had been entries of 231 horses, 90 cattle and 220 sheep for the Feilding Show. ; It had been expected that butter and cheese factories would have to close down about six weeks earlier on account of the loss of feed due to bush and grass fires. * There had been a serious outbreak cf typhoid and enteric fever in the Auckland district.

The scarcity of farm labourers was becoming moru and more acute throughout the country. Public works had been too attractive. A shearer, who had been doing a round of sheds in the Manawatu district, had shorn 8000 sheep and had earned £BO, eoual to £5 a week. Three hordes had been sold in the public pound at Palmerston North, one realising £l2 10s, the second £7 and the third £1 ss. The money had gone into the coffers of the Borough Council.
