FIRE IN TARARUAS.
BEAUTIFUL BUSH MENACED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. A fire of unknown origin is raging in the Tararuas in the vicinity of the Merchant Range, menacing the surrounding native bush, which is considered to be almost the finest in New Zealand.
A party of members of the Tararua Tramping Club, who visited the ranges this morning, apparently were the first to observe the flames. They notified the authorities at Wellington, who made an instant appeal to trampers and others to volunteer aid. The party was actually at the scene of the fire and set to work immediately to check the flames, assisted by men working at the Kaitoke camp job. A large number of people, well armed with axes, slashers and first-aid material, have gone out from the city. With a strong nor’-westerly wind, the flames are sweeping down the Marchant Range into the Tauherenikau Valley.
