SUBMOUNT’S TRIUMPH.

CRITICS CONFOUNDED. BARGAIN FOR OWNER.

(By “Spectator.”)

Surmount, who in winning the Wellington Stakes equalled th reace record of Diatomous and Mala, and was only a quarter of a second outside the Australian and New Zealand record, confirmed tho opinion expressed by “Spectator” after his Marton running that the best had not been seen of this courageous colt, whom a cold prevented from going to Ellerslie. Just before going to Trentham he ran the first two furlongs of half a mile in 23scc. at Awapuni. Surmount is undoubtedly, like Martara, another great bargain for the Palmerston North sportsman, Mr C. W. Boyd, who also has Noisy Night and Baldric, and is now training his own horses. Surmount wa9 purchased after being passed in at auction for 110 guineas, ana his two wins and five seconds in eight starts have brought £B9O in stakes. Surmount is undoubtedly one of the speediest of the season's two-year-olds, as well as one of the most consistent. lie has been first or second in every race he has had. The only outing ho had during the holidays was at Marton, when he was boaten by Icing in a slow-run five furlongs for two and three-year-olds. A brown colt by Surveyor from the Day Comet The Boyne mare Cometary, ho is a full-brother to Survey.

Prediction Will Improve. Prediction, who finished fourth in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Wellington, and who is trained at Awapuni by G. W New, looks likely later to develop into a useful horse.

Dictate’s Stake Earnings. Dictate, who three years ago was purchased at Trentham for 50 guineas, was not raced as a two-year-old. lie has had nine wins and eight minor placings in 26 starts, for £1990 in stakes. From Speedy, Line. Kathbella, who won the Fitzherbert Handicap at Trentham in her third start of the season, is a bay daughter of Beau Pere and the Lackham—Hymarty mare Royal Line, the dam also of Arauline and Mesurina, who both possessed plenty of early speed in their races. She carries the colours of her breeder, Mr F. Ormond, for whom she is trained at Hustings by S. J. Reid.

Lady Montana Useful. Lady Montana, who won the Apprentices' Plate on the opening day at Trentham, has had three wins and two minor placings this season. She usually finishes on strongly in her races ,and _ is a bay daughter of the Kilboy— Conceit mare Kilceit, a half-sister to Egotism, dam of Pride, Jalotix, etc., and the dam previously of Walton Park and Chaste, both useful performers. Related To Te Kara.

Bronze Trail, who is entered for minor events at the Takapuna meeting, has been in work for some months, but has never raced. lie is a well-grown throe-year-old by Bronze Eagle from March, therefore a half-brother to Te Kara (winner of the Auckland Cup in 1924), Queen March and several other useful performers. In conformation Bronze Trail resembleß Te Kara to some extent, and it will bo interesting

to see if he possesses the galloping ability for which the family has been noted. Vadanoe Makes Good, Vadanoe, who has improved considerably since joining G. New s string aftei the Feilding meeting and showed a return to form by running second to Aureus atMaiton before winning tho hack sprint on the opening dav at Trentham fat a long price, is raced by his breeders, Messrs Harrison, of Mangaweka. He was a promising juvenile last BOason, with two minor placings and then a win in four outings. His success came against older horses in a maiden field at Foxton during the winter, when he was trained at Hawera. This season ho did not strike promise of form till his second at Marton. He is a brown colt by Vaals, a sire Of speed, and bis dam is the Kilbroney—Glen Helen mare Idanoe, a descendant of Madowla, one of the stoutest foundation mares of tho Stonyhurst -stud.
