NEW FLYING-BOAT

TWO ’PLANES IN ONE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 21, 1.85 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 20. Britain’s new pick-a-back flyingboat, consisting of a smaller ’plane named Mercury perched on top of the mother craft, had a successful first trial flight, encircling Rochester at a height of 1000 ft for an hour. The next test will be the crucial one. The Mercury will then be launched from the top of the mother craft at a height of 5000 ft and the ’planes will fly separately. The pick-a-back possibly will revolutionise long-distance flying, the idea being to release the smaller ’plane in mid-air for long journeys with heavy loads after the larger ’plane has given it a. start from 5000 ft.
