MARTON, Jan. 21

Mr J. E. Watts, a son of Mr A. E. Watts, “Braeside,” Marton, has been appointed to the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Mr Watts will be granted the temporary rank of pilot officer for the period of his training. Alberta Vivien Beavis and Gladys May Horsman, pupils of the Marton District High School, was successful in passing the Training College Entrance Examinations. Mr S. A. Mclndoe has received word of a transfer on promotion to Hawera. The friends of Miss Mountfort, who recently underwent a serious operation in the Wanganui Hospital, will, be pleased to learn that she is now making a good recovery.

The friends of Mrs D. Paterson, of Marton, will be pleased to learn that she is making a good recovery after an operation. Mrs D. G. McDougall, of Turakina, who is in hospital, has shown a slight improvement.

The reconstruction and tar-sealing of Calico Line is now in progress. The

cost of the work is £4OOO. Two streets have been tar-sealed during the week as the Borough Council’s works programme for the year. Harris Street was completed two days ago Cubbabballa Street, with the exception of pieces outside the State houses, pending the installation of mains, was finished this afternoon.

Flames at the main gates of the Marton Park were suppressed this afternoon by a bucket brigade, only the grass * being damaged. Three grass fires were extinguished by the Marton Fire Brigade.
