ORATORY BRILLIANT.
SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM. AWAPUNI HORSES TO THE FORE. For the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham yesterday there was another large attendance, the totalizator figures being £44,905 (win £20,986 10s, place £23,918 10s), compared with £76.291 last year. The corresponding day last year was Anniversary Day and the third day a Saturday, so the figures yesterday cannot really be compared wiili either of those two clays. Considering that it was really very much of an off-day, tho total compares very favourably with the Cup Day turnover of £46,363. Awapuni-trnincd horses again achieved prominence, the outstanding performance being the brilliant mile of Oratory in the January Handicap. In running 1.36 she equalled the recently established Ncw_ Zealand record of Courtcralt in tho King’s Plato on the second day of the Auckland meeting. On that occasion Courtcraft carried his woight-for-age, and Oratory finished third, but yesterday Oratory carried 51b over her woight-for-age. The sprint went to Lady Ina, who boat the favourite Bon Braggie decisively. Mislma, a rank outsider, won tho Douro Cup Handicap. RACING IN DETAIL. A head; a length. Huskie was fourth. Timo, 2.6 J. Journet came from several places back in the early stages after a slow beginning, but Nightlass was always fairly well placed and Lustral was in the middle of the field, tho pace being made by Charade, Bonny Glow, and Convivial. All the three leaders were stopping at the false rail, where Nightlass drew abend. A strong challenge by Journet saw him get up on tho pest to win by half a. head. A length away there was a great finish for third money between Lustral, Huskic, The Surgeon, Southern Blood, Convivial, and Charade. TRIAL PLATE, of £300; second £6O. third £3O. Seven furlongs. 5- Mr W. J. McGill’s eh g LE TOQUET (Gainseourt —Provence), 4 yrs, 8.5 (S. Wilson) 1 3-3 Mr F. Ormond’s hr f THALA, 3yrs, 8.0 (P. Atkins) 2 2- Mrs H. B. A length; a head. Flame Queen was fourth. Time, 1.26. Haile Selassie, Earlscourt and Flame Queen set a very fast pace and carried most of the runners off their feet, particularly the favourite Play who had the misfortune to get chopped back at the start. He showed a lot of pace to draw up fairly prominently in the middle stages, but of course lie could not go on with it. The pace set by tho leaders had them in trouble entering the straight, where Tliala and Le 'Toquet drew up. Then Mulatto came with a strong run [wide out on the track and momentarily looked like finishing the best of this trio, but ho did not carry on so strongly to the end, and Le Toquet, finishing the better, won fairly comfortably. Thala just kept his head in front of Mulatto for second money. They were clear of Finnic Queen, who was attended by Twilight Song, Amatory and . Earlscourt. n : JANUARY HANDICAP, of £350; second £7O; third £35. One mile. 3- Mr T. A. Duncan’s eh in ORATORY (Gainseourt —Oratress) syrs, 9.4 (B. H. Morris) 1 66 Mr H. L. A length; half a length. Valamito was fourth. Time, 1.36. Oratory was responsible for a brilliant performance, winning all the way in-, time which equalled the recently-established re cord of Courtcraft at Ellerslie. Oratory was attended in the running by Roaming and then a bunch which included Yalamito, Alby, Debham, and Old Surrey. Alma mado a brilliant move out of the back stretch to become very prominent on the turn, but she did not go on with it, and eventually finished u bad last. Oratory ’ led into the straight from Roaming and Valamito with most of. the others finding tho pace too much. Oratory was holding Roaming nicely at the last furlong, but as danger was threatening from others at this stage Morris shook her up and, responding well, she ran on to score very decisively at tho finish from Roaming, Wildflower putting in an electric run to cut out Valamito for third on the pest. The next ‘to finish were Alunga, Boomerang, and Debham. The fast pace sot by Oratory, had everything in trouble. CAMP HANDICAP, of £300; second £6O, third £3O. Six furlongs. 7-6 Mr Q. Donald’s blk g ALLOA (Grand Knight—Tetranella), syrs., car. 7.0 (A. E. Bennet ... 1 2- Mr J. A. Brown’s blk. g. LORD NUFFIELD, 8.6 (L. j. Ellis) ... 2 9- Mrs B. H. Three-quarters of a length; a head. Lazybones was fourth. Time, 1.12^. An outsider in Alloa won the sprint, but he was responsible for an amazingly good performance, for lie was last all tho way in the early running and still last when they came on to tho course proper. Here the early leaders began to fade, with the exception of Accomplice and Lord Nuffield, who began a great struggle in which they were joined by Lazybones and Race Call. Accomplice and Lord Nuffield came on
well, but Lazybones stumbled about 100 yards off the post and lost any chance lie had. Finally Alloa came with an amazing run on tho rails and went on to score convincingly from Lord Nuffield, who just headed Accomplice and Lazybones. The next to finish wore Pekoe, Sunbeam, Great Quex and Double Gift. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB HANDICAP, of £750; second £l5O, third £75. On mile and three furlongs. 5- Mr J. Half a length ; three-quarters of a length. Padishah was fourth. Time, 2.20 j. There was a complete upset of Cup form. Kelly went to tho front from the start and set a sound but not an excessive pace, and was allowed his own rules. He bowled along freely to the straight and then, when challenged, had too much left in him to be overhauled. Lowenberg. who ran a mucli better race than on the first day, had moved up slightly on the home turn and he.put in a determined challenge, but he was just good enough for second Round Up, who' had pulled hard in behind Kelly most ot tho way, weakened slightly over the last bit and just beat Padishah and Cerne Abbas, who finished together. NURSERY HANDICAP, of £350; second £7O, third £35; for two-year-olds. Six furlongs. 4- Mr 11. D. Greenwood’s b c DE- j FAULTER (Defoe —Expense), ear. 7.101, (L. J. Ellis) 1 ,2-2 Mr L. G. Three lengths; two lengths. Dunmanway was fourth. Time, l.llf. The running was made by Surmount, from ’lvur, Amigo and Defaulter. Surmount and Ivar had had enough entering the straight, where Amigo ran through and looked like winning, but Defaulter, coming on the rails, scored what really amounted to a runaway win. Amigo was just as comfortably second from Ivar, with Dunmanway finishing fast from the rear of the field into fourth place; then came Eastern Heir, Surmount, and Piastre. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP, of £500; second £IOO, third £SO. Six furlongs. 4-4 Mr A. Southey’s b m LADY INA (Cape Horn —Kakawai), aged, 7.12 (L. 11. Clifford) 1 1-1 Mr G. Tremain) 3 Also started: 5-5 Top Row 7.13, 3-3 Laughing Lass 7.12, 2-2 Grey Honour 7.9, 7- Icing car. 7.1. A length; half a head. Top Row was fourth. Timo, l.lli. Lady Ina made amends for her bad luck the first day by a decisive win. The
pace was made by Grey Honour and Ben Braggie, with Top Row handy. Lady Ina just in behind, and Triune tailing off. In tho straight Ben Braggie came on well under his weight, but Lady Ina ran on much the bettor at the finish and scored decisively. Triune came very fast on the rails in the run homo, and just failed by inches to get second from Ben Braggie. Top Row was fourth, and then Laughing Lass, Icing and Grey Honour. Tho winner won really well. DOURO CUP HANDICAP, of £400; second £BO, third £4O. One mile. 12-9 Mr C. G. Watson’s eh h MISIINA (Rabbi —Conviction), 4yrs, 7.13 (Mr R. W. MeTavisb) ... 1 2-3 Mr J. T. dress 8.3, 6-6 Relative 8.0, 4-4 Studley Royal 7.11, 8-10 Balmentor 7.8, 11-12 Noisy Night 7.0. Three-quarters of a length; two and a half lengths. Relative was fourth. Time, 1.384. Tho race was spoiled to a great extent by the favourite, Cricket, Salient Knight, Studley Royal, and Balmenter, all getting squeezed back at the start, their chance* being immediately extinguished. SilverRiver rushed to the front and endeavoured to win all the way. Ho set such a fast pace that he had most of the field in trouble. Relative, Mishna, Nightdress, Wagner and Lickem were nearest to the pacemaker in the running Silver River led into the straight from Relative, Mishna, Lickem, and Good Sun. Silver River ran on well, but over the final stages Mishna came up on his inner with a determined run and won going away. Good Sun was a fair third, with Relative fourth, aDd then Nightdress, Lickem. Balmenter, and Tail Light.
