ASHHURST RACES.

HOLIDAY MEETING TO-MORROW. REVIEW OF FORM. (By “Spectator.”) Recognised as one of the most popular holiday fixtures on the Manawatu-Wcst Coast circuit, the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club’s meeting will be hold to-morrow (Anniversary Day), when a feature will be two cup races. Excellent fields are engaged, including horses which have been racing at Trentham this week, and there are plenty of guides to form. Tho stewards of the club, in conformity with their progressive and onterprising policy, have provided every inducement for public patronage, and a record crowd is anticipated. Betting at tho meeting will be on the single pool system, with a dividend indicator. Improvements carried out since the last mooting include the erection of an up-to-dato number and jockeys’ board, and tho provision of another parking area to accommodate cars from Hawke’s Bay and tho Wairarapa. A review of the fields is as follows: 12.0 HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £l4O. One mile and a half. 1

Despite her heavy impost, Aurora’s Love, a double winner over hurdles at Marton, may be equal to holding the opposition in this event, but sho may forgo this engagement and race in tho Hack Cup. Contact has shown fair form over hurdles, and Even Money, who has consistently filled minor places, is resuming after a spell. Kentucky Song won on the first day of .the Taranaki meeting. King’s Lancer’s form has been poor, and Bing Boy, who won the highweight on the second day at Marton, is a newcomer to jumping. In the absence of Aurora s Love, who is a class abovo tho othor jumpers, the best supported may be: Kentucky Song, Count Willonyx, Even Money. 12.40 POHANGINA HANDICAP, of £l5O. Six furlongs.

Joviality, whose earlier form in sprints was top class, was unsuccessful at Auckland, but will be meeting weaker com-, pany here, though he is conceding a lot of woight. Notium is. a handy sprinter who was second in this event last year, but has no recent form. Body line raced well at Manawatu. Mister Qucx has not done much of late, but won tho hack sprint at Ashhurst last year. Golden Chest ran well in strong company at Marton, where Great Hope, who is in excellent condition at present, was a double winner. Passion Fruit and Lifeguard have little to commend them of late, but a horse with distinct prospects should be Silvanus, who was second at New Ply mouth and then won at Stratford during tho holidays. The public may prefer: Great Hope, Silvanus, Golden Chest. 1.20 KOMAKO HACK HANDICAP, of £l3O. Six furlongs.

Erebus had only one race at the Manawatu meeting, and was distinctly unlucky. Sardius and Royal Record have dono little of late, but Red Cat is a. smart sort, who has won at the last two of her three starts. Silvanus may possibly be reserved for this event. Lindrum is very smart, but prefers the shorter distance of five furlongs. Colleen Gam and Son and Heir have little to commend them, but Ohanga was a winner at Stratford. Alloa raced prominently in tho highweight on tho first day at Trentham and won yesterday, and Captain Treville, who usually runs - a good race, was second at Marton. Copycat has had a first, second and third placing in three starts this season. Vadanoo beat a big field in tho Ruapehu Handicap at Trentham, but may not start at Ashhurst, in which event the favouritism may be shared by: Alloa, Red Cat, Erebus. 2.0 ASHHURST CUP, of £3OO. One mile and

Master Cyklon, who won at the recent Manawatu meeting, was third, in this ovent last year, and should again go well. Winner of the Aldworth Stakes at Marton, Wildflower has shown very consistent form this season, and got third in the t3ig”Tace -at Trentham yesterday. Pladie has been disappointing of late, but Boomerang, now low in the weights, is always a possibility. Helen Ford was a winner on the second day at Wairarapa, and should race well. Alby has steadily been regaining his best form, and was second to Dictate at Wellington. He is nicely placed in> this event; for an improving horse. Grand Jury, carrying nearly two stone more than his j present impost, won this race last year,: but has not since got on tho winning list, j Though ho has ' seen his best- ■‘ days, the veteran is very partial to this course. Terry has not been prominent since he won at tho Levin meeting. Red Sand showed good form in hack ranks over the holidays, and will be having his first race in open company, • but. may bo reserved for tho concluding event Probably most confidence will be shown m Alby, Wildflower, Master Cyklon. 2.45

Aria, who has filled many minor places in this class of event, got noarost the winning list at Marten. Ilion. Royal Tinge, and Vintner have shown somo form, with the last-named perhaps the best of them,

but the others havo practically no credentials. Best supported may be: Aria, Cloak, Vintner. 3.30 , MANAWATU GORGE HACK CUP, of £2OO. Eight furlongs and a half.

Silver River, a winner over six furlongs at Manawatu and li miles at Marton, warrants the topweight position in this field, but ho is likely to moot strongest opposi tion from Race Boy, winner of tho Tako Highweight at Stratford. Maestro was disappointing during the holidays, but was formerly trained on this course. Buster Brown has shown fair form, and though Ilias has not raced since the Foilding meeting, he is reported to bo wclj forward. Galteemore ran well but without luck at the Manawatu meeting. Lord Quick, who was prominent on the first day at Trentham, Diamond Cutter, Bing Boy, Ohanga, and Agog were all winners during the holidays, Bluffer, if he is to mako amends for his recent failures, should do so in this field. Joe Louis has recently boon disappointing, but Nightlass, judging by her running at Trentham, appears to be striking form. Tho favourites may be: Silver River, Race Boy, Ohanga. 4.15 SIBERIA HACK HANDICAP, of £l3O.

Erebus, mentioned earlier, is again topweight in this event, most of tho runners in the Komako Hack having ihe dual engagement. Free Gold, who is improving, was heard of at Trentham, and two newcomers are Golden Ridge and War Lap, the latter of whom has been off the scene for some time. Le Toquct, after a long run of minor placings, scored at Trentham, and Tommy Atkins, after showing up at Woodville, won at Waipukurau during tho holidays. Merry Ruler made his best showing for some time at Marton, but faded out towards the end of his race. Fox Moth is on the improve. The public’s preference, providing some of tho horses fulfil their earlier engagements, may bo for: Lindrum, Free Gold, Le Toquet. 5.0 RAUMAI HANDICAP, of £l5O. Seven furlongs. Alunga 9 0 Great Hope 7 10 Notium 8 2 Passion Fruit 7 9 Bodyline 8 0 Race Boy 7 9 Mister Quex 712 Royal Record 7 7 Golden Chest 710 Red Sand 7 7 Alunga, whoso recent form has been first-class, heads the field in tho final event. All the others have prior engagements, but a number will undoubtedly be reserved for this event. Those likely to find most favour are:— Red Sand, Alunga, Mister Quex.
