OROUA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Oroua County Council was held yesterday. Those present were Crs. A. Campbell (chairman), E. 0. McElroy, W. Greenhow, W. McLennan and T. Green. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Public Works Department, advising that the summer census of traffic is to be taken on main highways from January 2G to February 2. —Received From the Wellington Local Bodies Officers’ Industrial Union of Workers, asking for a lisp of members of staff who should belohg to the union —Received, From the Department of Labour, drawing attention to section 15 or Shops and Offices Act, providing for deciding what working day in the week shall l>e the statutory half holiday.—Received. From the New Zealand Institute of Engineers, asking that facilities be granted to the engineer to attend the annual conference. Permission was granted to the engineer (Mr R. L. Harding) to attend, if possible. From the Kairanga County Council, asking that hemlock growing near Bunnythorpe be eradicated.—lt was decided that attention be paid to the matter. From the Kairanga County Council, forwarding a statement in connection with the apportionment of heavy traffic fees.—Received. The amount involved was £274 19s 2d. From the Commissioner of Transport, forwarding a copy of amendments to the Heavy Motor Vehicle Regulations, 1932, showing a new table of load, limits for four-wheel vehicles over roads a« follow : —Class 3, gross weight, 7 tons; class 4, gross weight, 5 tons ; class 5, gross weight, 3p tons. From the Commissioner of Transport, asking for particulars regarding the issuing of motor drivers’ licenses. —lt was agreed to supply the information. From the Manawatu Automobile Association, offering assistance in supplying signs where new road works are in operation.—lt was decided that the council give its co-operation where necessary. The chairman said that the association was doing good work. From the Public Works Department, asking for particulars concerning a drain through the Oliver estate. , —Received. RATE ROLL TRANSFERS. The following transfers were approved. —G. F. W. Hickmott to Mrs E. A. Simpson, H. Alder to J. H. U Slack, G. M. May to L. 11. 0. Wishnowsky, S. T. Lowe to W. 0. NofTke. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr R. Harding, the engineer, submitted his report as follows : —Eastern Riding: The old wooden kerbing at Ashhiirst has been replaced in concrete. Gravel repairs have been carried out on the following roads: Tno-nui-Colyton, 248 cubic yards; FeildingRaumai, 80; Reid’s Line, 72; Bunny-thorpe-Ashhurst, 80. The work of surfacing Stoney Creek road with fine crushed gravel is now being attended to. Loose gravel on the BunnythorpeAshhurst and Colyton-Ashhurst Roads has been stabilised with clay. The work of preparing the balance of Pohangina Road for sealing will be commenced next week. Western Riding: An examination disclosed that tho abutments to the old bridge on Kimbolton Road near Cheltenham were in a dangerous state. Temporary repairs are now being carried out with old bridge timber, but this bridge must be renewed in the near future. Some gravel repairs have been carried out on Mangaone Road, and Junction Road has been trimmed with grader. On the main road from Kakariki bridge to Feilding a considerable quantity of clay has been used to stabilise the excessive accumulations of loose gravel. The preparation work on Makino Road has been completed and | the application of the primer coat : should be finished by the end of this

week. The engineering survey of the Feilding-Hnlcombe Rond is now proceeding, and it is intended to have plans for the reconstruction of this road ready for next year. TREASURER’S REPORT. Rates outstanding previous three years at 31-3-37: Natives, £451 Os 2d; Crown £123, European £419 14s 2d, total £996 14s 4d. Collected: European arrears, £241 6s; arrears outstanding, £755 8s 4d. Amount of rates levied for currentyear, £15,382 9s lid, collected to date, £10,384 3s 4cl; outstanding £4998 6s 7d. Riding accounts. —Expenditure on maintenance, Western riding, £2526 8s lid; presented for payment, £67 13s lid. Expenditure on' maintenance Eastern riding, £2764 16s Id; presented for payment, £l6 10s lid. County fund account, credit, £l5O 3s.
