METECR THEATRE. “UNDER YOUR SPELL.” 1 Because his indefatigable manager was coo successful in procuring him engagements, Lawrence T ibbelt flees out to the .ride West to escape spending his every Moment in song, in the Twentieth Genii rv-Kox musical hit, . “Under Your .Spell,” now at the Meteor Theatre, llow•ver, the baritone, in his haste to get away, forgets that every modern cowboy is a crooner, and when - he arrives on his New Mexico ranch, 'Jibbett is greeted by a rousing camplirc song-festival of thrilling choral harmonies. Eeaiured are several new Western songs by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz, popular rhythm masters. “Under Your' Spell” finds Wendy Jlarrio, Gregory Ratolf and Arthur Treacher in support of its world-famous singing star. “SHOW THEM NO MERCY!” Prom the 20th Century-Fox showshops of Darryl F. Zanuck, astute producer of sensational and unusual film dramas, comes “Show Them, No Mercy!” the an tier line picture which exposes the force and violence of, the new underworld terror in exciting fashion. The picture,, now at the Meteor Theatre,' was adapted from the story by Kubec Glasmon, nationally famous lor his stories of gangsterdom. Action in “Show Them No Mercy!” centres about the plight of a young couple trapped in the cabin of desperadoes, while the entire nation mobilizes for the manhunt to stamp out these ruthless criminals. lively Rochelle Hudson heads the cast in the picture which features Cesar Romero, Bruce Cabot and Edward i Norris. George Marshall directed “Show Them No Mercy!” REGENT THEATRE. “NIGHT MUST FALL.” Adopting a technique of story construction that is entirely now on the screen, Metro-Goldwyn-Maycr introduces a novel picture in “Night Must Fall,” which j screens finally at. the Regent to-night. ■ The film is a daring venture in the proI duction field, but even more experimental ! for Robert Montgomery who deliberately chose to drop his accustomod heroic roles for the characterisation of a pathological killer. His performance is remarkable from every standpoint. There is no element of mystery in the narrative. It is ! the peculiarly effective account of a youth | whose mind is bent on crime. The situation is complicated by the romance beI tween him and Rosalind Russell as a girl I who finds herself in the unenviable posi- ! tion of loving a man whom she knows to |he had. Thu background of the story is | a country carnival and a small hotel, where most of the action occurs. Hunt Stromberg produced the film with Richard I Thorpe directing. An idea of the import- ! ancp which M-G-M attached to the picture is indicated by the fact that Stromhorg was the man who produced “Rose I Marie,” “The Great Ziegfeld.” “After the Thin Man” and other notable screen triumphs. Montgomery played in “The Last of Mrs Clieyney,” “Piccadilly Jim” and similai successful Dims. Miss Russell is remembered for her outstanding work in “Craig’s Wife” and “Rendezvous.” In the cast are players from the original slage company who appeared in the play for 55 consecutive weeks Among thorn are Dame May Whitty, Merle Tottenham, Matthew Boufton and Kathleen Harrison. Alan Marshall and E. E. Clive also have prominent roles.
