INCREASE IN STERLING EXCHANGE NOTE ISSUE LOWER. The weekly statement of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as at the close of business on Monday, January 17, is as follows: LIABILITIES.
Proportion of reserve (No. 7 less No. 5) to notes and other demand liabilities, 69,963 per cent., compared with 69-221 per cent, on January 10. The note issue continues at a high level despite the natural decreases since the high point of Christmas. Since January 10 the note issue has decreased by £195,952, and now stands at £14,532,505, which is £1,320,015 above the figure for January 18, 1937. State deposits show a decrease of £180,415, the total now being £3,040,116. The trading banks' reserve balances total £9,628,811, an increase of £775,159. Other demand liabilities stand at £650,577, an increase of £756,628. y Other liabilities at £191,717 show an increase of £22,343. London funds show an increase of £535,207, after having steadily de-j creased for some weeks past, and the sterling exchange total now stands at £16,683,102. Gold remains unchanged at £2,801,791. Subsidiary coin totals £217, 883, an increase of £2612. Advances to the Primary Products Marketing Department total £6,221,143, a decrease of £22,521. Advances to the State for other purposes stand unchanged at £900,000. Investments remain unchanged at £2,658,325. Other assets total £59,482, a decrease of £18,535. The statement balances at £29,541,726, an increase of £496,763.'
