The Mayor of Portland (Oregon), Mr Carson, testifying before the Senate Commerce Committee, expressed annoyance with Mr Harry Bridges, .whom he described as an ‘‘Australian alien.” Mr Bridges appeared in Portland several -times and criticised the city’s government. Mr Carson declared that since Mr Bridges was not an American citizen he had no right to do so. Labour disorders in the shipping industry had cost Portland, 1,000,000,000 dollars during the past three years.
