SYDNEY EN FETE
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS. ACCOMMODATION TAXED. I ILLUMINATIONS ON BRIDGE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 21, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 20. Visitors from all parts of the world are gathering at Sydney for the anni- . versary celebrations and the Empire Games. Hotel accommodation is rapidly filling and fancy prices are being paid for seats and windows along the route of next Wednesday’s pageant, ‘‘The March to Nationhood.” Five miles of the city streets have been gaily decorated in distinctive block colours of red and white and blue and white. Tricolour flagstaff's have been erected every 50yds and the tall city buildings have been draped and dressed in rich colourings with grouped bunting and crests. A feature of the illuminations will be the Harbour Bridge which, by means of 17,000,000 candle power flood-lighting, will be made to resemble the rising sun. It will he a spectacle of indescribable beauty. All the statues and most of the city parks and gardens will be a blaze of colour- at nighttime. Athletes from all parts of the Empire have arrived and houses and villages at the Showground will presently be fully occupied. The athletes are draining for the Empire Games and have settled down comfortably. Their only complaint is against the protracted spell of humid heat which began six weeks ago.
