BOWLING

RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. FIVE WITH TWO LIVES. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Jan. 19. Twenty-nine rinks took part in postsectional play when the New Zealand bowling tournament was continued today in perfect weather, and at the conclusion of three rounds played under the automatic two-life system that number was reduced to 16, of which five rinks still have two lives.

The five two-lifers are those skipped by Aitchison (Caledonian), Thomson (Phoenix), Wilson (Linwood), Britten (Sydenham) and Foster (Caversham). The 10 rinks left with one life each are those skipped by Thompson (li.ilmacewan), Carswell (Taieri), Webster (Kaituna), Veitch (West Harbour), Dowland (St. Kilda), Ferguson (Balmacewan), Tyrrell (Roslyn), Piper (Maitai), Marks (Christchurch) and Bull (Hawera). In practically every case the two-lifc men went through the three rounds of post-sectional play with convincing victories, Thomson in particular registering three good wins. His victims were Dowland (St. Kilda), Gagliardi (Edgeware) and Piper (Maitai). Gagliardi gained seven wins and one loss in the section play, but went out comparatively easily in the first two rounds to-day. Aitchison’s three wins included victories over Marks (Christchurch) and Tyrrell, the well-known Roslyn player. Wilson won his matches comfortably, in no instance being extended. Foster and Britten each drew a. bye and had to play only two games. In the third round match Britten accounted for Veitch (West Harbour), 25—16 on the twentieth head, after the local rink had liad an early advantage. One of the most interesting games, although by no means the closest, was that in which the veteran W. Carswell, with one life, mot Watts (Victoria) and won bv the substantial margin of nine points on the twentieth head. Carswell played brilliantly, bi 6 drawing shots being a model of accuracy, and be ran to a 15 —1 lead on the eighth head. Against such a lend the visiting rink could do little. Although they drew up slightly in the middle of the game, they practically had no chance from the l>egmning. Post-section plav will be continued to-morrow in addition to as many crames in the pairs and singles ae can be arranged. Results: KAITUNA GREEN. First green.—Longworth (St. Kilda) 18 v.
