TIMBER FIRE.
CHRISTCHURCH PREMISES.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 19. A fire which broke out early this morning caused damage estimated at over £IOOO at the Western Timber Company premises in Sydenham. All the plant and half the stock were destroyed by the flames, which had secured a very strong hold by the time the brigade was called out. The heat was so fierce that the galvanised iron walls of the building were bent and crumpled, while the force of the water tore the iron away from its supports. Although the hoses kept up a continual stream of water it was not until an hour later that the blaze was conquered. One tall rack escaped the flames altogether.
