COST OF SUNBURN.

RULES FOR AVOIDING DANGER. Every vear sunburn costs the world at least £280,000. This bill is caused by the loss of 200,000 working days duo to over-indulgence in sunbathing, states an overseas, writer. Startling although these figures seem, they are given as strictly accurate by Dr Charles F. Pabst, chief dermatologist of Greenpoint Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, Ho is a crusader against reckless sunbathing, which may lead to serious illness and even to death. He has issued a pamphlet called “Tan Commandments,” in which he lays down explicit directions for avoiding the danger. BLONDES AND BRUNETTES. The pamphlet shows that a rainy day is the best weather for blondes and red-heads—a brunette prefers the sun. Blondes and redheads are “heliophobes,” the doctor explains. They burn, but do not tan, and they feel blue and depressed on bright, sunny days. On the other hand, “helioplnles” (brunettes) tan almost as soon as the sun strikes them, arid they are likely to be vivacious and gay in the summer sunlight. SUNBATHING RULES.

Dr Pabst’s “Tan Commandments” are as follows (1) Acquire a coat of tan, provided you are not a heliopliobe, by means of short exposures. (2) Do not sleep on the beach in the direct rays of the-' sun. (3) Do not sit in the sun when the body is wet after bathing. (4) Do not go bareheaded in strong sunlight. (5) Do not read books or play cards in the direct rays of the sun. (6) Do not drink strong liquor while exposed in the summer sun; alcohol and sun do not mix. (7) Do not sprinkle perfume on the skin- before exposure to the sun; a severe inflammation of the skin may result.

(8) Do not recline in strong sunlight after strenuous • exercise. (9) Do not forget that blondes and brunettes react differently to the sun's rays; blondes burn more easily. (10) If your skin will redden, blister and burn, but never tan, you are a heliopliobe, and should not expose yourself, as every new exposure means a new burn.
