INJURED BY BOMB.

RAID ON SHANGHAI. NURSE FARRELL’S CLAIM. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20. A claim for £IO,OOO compensation for being wounded during a bombing raid at Shanghai is being made by Miss Elsie Farrell, of New Zealand. Nurse Farrell, who is a daughter of Mr John Farrell, the theatrical manager, suffered severe ' facial injuries when the car in which she was ridng ? was destroyed by a bomb during an air raid on the International Settlement at Shanghai on August 14 of last year. Miss Farrell, who is at present in Manila, has sent the details of her claim, which she has lodged with the British Consul-General in Shanghai, to her father. She does not appear to be very optimistic as to the outcome, for in an accompanying letter she remarked: “Of course, if the Chinese pay anything it will only be a small amount.”

In her claim she says: “I was unable to catch a bus, so I proceeded by rickshaw and was finally offered a lift by car. When we reached tlie crossing of Yuy (a Chinese road) and Edward VIT Road, a bomb dropped. The car in which I travelled was destroyed and the remains of it were all in flames. When I succeeded in escaping from the debris I was bleeding profusely, and I was picked up by French police and taken to the French hospital. I have over the right eye a very bad-looking, painful scar; over the nose, in- the height of the eyebrows, I have another very had scar. Five pieces of shrapnel are embedded in the skin of my skull, and they cause me constant pain and many sleepless nights. I lost my position as a result of the accident. There will be expense attached to further treatment, and the disfigurement of my face will remain.

“Since I am a trained nurse, m.v professional engagements depend to a large extent on my face value. None of the Shanghai physicians will guarantee thnt there will be no future repercussions, so the possibility remains that at some future date I may be unable to. follow my profession. After due consideration 1 claim from the responsible party £10,000.”
