OUTBACK PERSONALITY.

AWARD IN HONOURS LIST. NOMADS OF THE TRAIL. SYDNEY, Jan. 7. One of,-the most popular men in the Kimberleys, Western Australia, is Mr James Kerr Cunninghame, of Fitzroy Crossing, who was awarded the Imperial Service Order Medal in the New Year honours list.

“The Crossing” will scarcely recogniso his full name. To the people of about half a million square miles, he has never been anything else but very affectionately “Dad Cunninghame.” Fitzrov Crossing is 2000 straight miles from Sydney. A hotel and a store and a post office are midway between Derby and Hall’s Creek, which are 600 miles apart. “Dad’f is the post office, and has been for 10 years. For a score or so of stations from 50. to 200 miles apart, he carries out all the duties of a. full post and telegraph. staff. The rest of his customers are the wanderers'of that huge c'attle-country—l-ringers, drovers, prospectors, donkey-teamsters, well-si nicer bagmen a,nd other nomads of ' the Kimberley trail who call in onco in perhaps two vears; 'A good many of them have the letters addressed to their Christian na.mes —Bill the Cook, at Fossil Downs. Tom. the Ranger, and so on. “Dad” knows them all.
