PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, Jan. 18. The Major (Mr J. D. Wilson) presided at the first meeting for the year of the Pahiatua Borough Council, held last evening, when Mies E. Chatwin, who has been librarian for the past twelve years, tendered her resignation as from January 31. The Mayor paid a tribute to Miss Chat win’s service over the past 12 years. Cr. J. W. Sturton endorsed the Mayor’s remarks and the council passed a resolution expressing appreciation of Miss Chatwin’s service. The treasurer (Mr L. D. Lovelock) stated that £1456 116 5d of the current year’s rates had been collected, as against £1465 8s lid at the same date last year. The total current rates unpaid are £2554 Is. It was advised by the Public Works Department that the whole of the work on the State highway is to be carried out forthwith and that the Highways Boa.rd is willing to accept the council’s one-quarter share of the £690 on or before April 30. In answer to a point raised by Cr. W. A. Carthew. the Mayor stated that the channelling at the footpaths, where the sealing was l>eing done, was the responsibility of the council. Cr. J. E. Murphy pointed out that the road was too flat at the point in question to let the water get away. It was agreed to refer the matter to the works committee to confer with the Highways Board. The Ministry of Housing made application for consent to lay a 6in common sewer [down the back of the houses, disrhargling into the sewer in Victoria Street. —Agreed to. Cr. G. H. Tcdd wondered whether it was not a waste of money sending a representative every year to the meeting of the Council of , the Municipal Association of New Zealand, which the association advised would be held in New Plymouth. It was agreed to appoint Cr. S. K. Siddells to attend the conference. Cr. Moriarty objected to houses being built before the council had neruw'd plans for same. Cr. Hodd agreed, adding that- the Government should not be allowed to put ur> their houses close together. He remarked that land was unlimited in Pahiatua.
