PADISHAH’S CUP.

WELLINGTON MEETING OPENS. AWAPUNI HORSES’ SUCCESS. Favoured by fine and warm weather, the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting opened yesterday with a fast track. Betting was substantial, the totnlisator turnover for the day being £46,363 (win £21,265; place £25,098). On the corresponding day last year the sum of £43,311 10s was handled, so that the increase was just over £3OOO. Tile Wellington Cup was won by Padishah after a splendid race. Padishah, who is a seven-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from the Martian mare Caress, beat the Palmerston North horse, Catalogue, owned by Mr E. L. Barnes, by only a small margin, Catalogue making an excellent challenge. An inquiry was held after the Cup into interference down the back stretch, the chief sufferers being Round Up, Cerno Abbas and Siogmund. The evidence indicated that it was due to The Bigot, who is blind in one eye, running about. It was not disclosed that there was any intentional interference, and no action was taken, but the stewards questioned the desirability of allowing one-eyed horses to race.

An incident was caused prior to the start of the Wellington Stakes by an escapade by Surmount, but he piled another sensation by scoring a totally unexpected and runaway win in time which equalled the race record. This Manawatu horse’s success was folowed later by that of Vadanoe in the Ruapehu Hack Handicap, which he won with a strong run. A splendid finish was witnessed in the open sprint, won by Top Row, and the other open event was won by he Riccarton horse, Dictate. RACING IN DETAIL. Surmount reared and foil, and then bolted through the straight down to the scraping sheds. The start was delayed until he was caught and remounted by his jockey, and returned to the post. Than; in the actual race, he hit the front from the start, and though Francis Drake went with him in the early stages Surmount ontered the straight well clear, and won decisively without ever having to suffer a real challenge. Brunhild, always fairly handy, stayed on for second place, just beating Amigo, who from No. 1 position did not begin so brilliantly as usual. Francis Drake was a very close fourth, and then there was a big gap t.o the remainder, who were all bunched, headed by Peerless and Icing.

Relative had always been fairly handy to Florence Mills in the running, but both Lady Montana and Good Sun came from the back. Good Sun’s performance was an excellent one, as he was right back, from a slow beginning. Doublt Gift was handy fourth after beginning well and holding a good position. '

Prediction was fourth, followed by Coronado, Piastre and Dunmanway.

WELLINGTON CUP, off £1275 (with £75 gold cup)-; second £250, third £125. One mile and a-half. 2-4 Mr J. A. Ilennah’s br g PADISHAH (Chief Ruler—Caress), aged,

7.9 (P. Atkins) ' 1 11-12 Mr E. L. Barnes’s b g CATALOGUE, 7yrs, 8.3 (W. Little) ... 2 13-13 Mr W. Henderson’s ch g, TIGER GAIN, 9yrs, 7.13 (C. P. Sheilds) ... 3

Also started: 8-8 Argentic 9.0, 3-2 Wild Chase 8.12, 6-7 The Buzzer 8.6, 4-3 Cerne Abbas 8.4, 5-6 Round Up 8.1, 7-5 Kelly 7.13, 1-1 Lowcnberg 7.12, 12-11 Siogmund 7.9, 14-14 Sunee 7.4, 10-9 Lucullus Lad 7.2, 9-10 Tho Bigot car. 7.6. A length and a-quarter; a head. Siegmnnd was fourth. Time, 2.31.

Padishah was responsible for a wonderful effort. Last all the way in running for the first mile, he then gradually began to improve his position and swept on in tho straight for a convincing victory. As anticipated, Lucullus Lad was the pacemaker. Though he switched about a bit at the start, lie soon ran to the front and carried the field along at a very sound pace, his nearest attendants being The Bigot, who was in turn clear of The Buzzer and Round Up together and then Catalogue, A little further back camo Cerne Abbas. Wild Chase, Siogmund, Tiger Gain and Lowenberg, the last three horses being Sunee, Kelly, and Padishah. Running down tho back stretch improvements in positions were attempted by Argentic, Lowenberg and Catalogue, while Cerne Abbas began to drift. A little later on The Buzzer was also losing ground, and as they ran down to the home turn The Bigot had been displaced, Lucullus Lad’s nearest attendant being Catalogue, followed by Argentic, Tiger Gain and Siegmund, with Padishah beginning to improve his position somewhat. Lucullus Lad still had charge as they entered the straight, but he was soon displaced by Catalogue. Tiger Gain and Siegmund wore doing well also at this stage, though it then appeared as if Catalogue had the race won. Over the final furlong, however, .Padishah came with an irresistible run and swept past Catalogue to win very decisively. Catalogue was beginning to slop and only just kept his head in front of Tiger Gain, with Siegmund a close fourth, ’flic Bigot and Cerne Abbas finished on again at the right end for fifth and sixth and they were followed by Lowenberg and Wild Chase. Padishah’s performance left no excuses for his opponents. Catalogue ran a remarkably good race and may have been a trifle unlucky in losing a little ground at the start. RUAPEHU HACK HANDICAP, of £300; second £6O, third £3O. Six furlongs. 12-14 Messrs A. and A. Marrison’s br c VADAXOE (Vaals—ldanoe), 3 yrs, 7.6 (G. R. Tattorsall) 1 1-2 Mrs M. Casey’s br g RACECALL, syrs, 8.8 (FI. N. Wiggins) 2 3-4 Mr E. W. Spence’s ch g RABBLE, 3yrs, car 7.5 (G. Watson) 3

Also started: 10-9 Wagner 9.0, 2-1 Lord Nuffield 8.8, 5-5 Ncreus 8.6, 13-11 Lazybones 8.4, 4-3 Free Gold 7.12, 18-17 Dancing Flame 7.7, 11-12 Mercenary 7.5, 7-7 Noisy Night car 7.1, 6-6 Sam’s Choice 7.5. 14-13 Conversion car 7.5, 9-10 Star Lad car 7.6, 19-19 Trcbor 7.2, 8-8 Accomplice ear 7.9, 21-20 Amoroso car 7.2, 20-21 Dracula 7.0, 16-16 Earlscourt 7.0, 22-22 Flame Queen 7.0, 23-23 Great Quex . 7.14, 15-15 Mulatto 7.0. A neck; three-quarters of a length. Ncreus was fourth. Time, 1.12.

Race Call, the win favourite, looked like bringing it oil after ho had taken charge from the false rail, but he began to stop over the last hit and Vadanoe, coming with a strong run, wore him down. I lie early leaders, Amoroso, Free Gold, Mercenary and Conversion, all stopped, Rabble coming through for third place, just, beating Nercus and Lazybones and they were followed by Mulatto, Flame Queen and Conversion.

TELEGRAPH HANDICAP, of £500; second £IOO, third £SO. Six furlongs. 5- Mr P. T. Hogan’s b c TOP ( ROW (Colossus —Hunt’s Up), 3yr«, 7.7 ' (P. Spratt) , ... .... 1 3-3 Mr A. Southey’s b m LADY INA, aged, car 7.84 (W. J. Broughton) 2 2- Mrs M. Reedy’s br h PAKANUI, syrs; car 7.10. (C. C. Goulsbro) ... 3 Also started: 1-1 Laughing Lass 8.1, 4-4 Grey Honour 7.11, 6-6 Alunga 7.2. Half a head; a head. Grey Honour was fourth. Time, 1.11. Though a small field of only six runners went to the post, it was a splendid race. The whole six were bunched just outside the last furlong, to which stage Top Row and Laughing Lass had led from Grey Honour and Lady Ina, with Pakanni coming through on the inner. Top Row bore out badly under pressure, and Grey Honour was the first to strike trouble, while Top Row finally carried Lady Ina right out. This gave Pakanui a great opportunity on the inner, hut both ho and Lady Ina just failed to catch Top Row in a very close finish. Grey Honour was fourth, and Laughing Lass last. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, of £350; second £7O, third £35. Olio mile. 1-1 Mr M. O’Brien’s b g DICTATE (Chief Rulci —Kirima), 4yrs, 8.12 (L. J. Ellis) 1 6- Mr J. T. Spears’s br g ALBY, aged, 8.2 (G. R. A length and a half; a head. Pukeko was fourth. Timo, 1.404The event was won decisively by the favourite, Dictate. Always well placed, he drew to the front when well in the straight and won with something in hand from Alby and Valamito, who had also been handy in the running. Pukeko, who tailed the field to the straight, finished very fast into a close fourth, and tho next to finish were Taitoru, Helen Ford, and Alma.
