FIREMEN OVERCOME.

FIGHT AGAINST FUMES. OUTBREAK IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Jan. 17. While fighting a fire in the basement of Linden Court. Castlereagh Street, in the city to-day 23 firemen were overcome by fumes and gas. Tim condition of four is described as serious. The fire apparently had been smouldering for some time. Firemen, using gasmasks, descended into the smokefilled basement, which was made ws lse by escaping gas and several feet oi Wl Sonie of the men collapsed immediately and were carried out by their comrades, who showed remarkable heroism. Air-condition aappartus was used for the first time and helped the brigades to master the fire, which at one stage threatened a block of big stores in the vicinity. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO.
