WREATH DROPPED ON SCENE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 17.. A radio message from the motor ship Matua to the New Zealand Herald, received to-night, stated: “After leaving Apia on Saturd-’v. the Matoa proceeded to the Position in the Straits between Upolu and Tutuila where PanAmerican Airways’ Samoan Clipper reached her tragio ending. When the position was reached at 4 p.m., Captain Prosser, the master of the Matua, conducted a short service and the passengers, ship’s officers, and crew joined together in singing the hymn, “Abide With Me.” The deviation from the course was made expressly for the purpose of dropping a wreath at the scene of the disaster on behalf of the New Zealand Government, the Samoan Administration. Tongan Government, the people of Rarotonga, the Union Steam Ship Company, the master, officers, and members of the ship’s company, the Auckland Harbour Board, and Mrs Smvthe. of Apia, Samoa. The short but impressive ceremony was concluded by observing two minutes’ silence.
