AUCKLAND ATHLETES.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 17. The Auckland athletes to leave tomorrow for the Empire Games at Sydney were farewelled at a gathering at the Town Hall this afternoon. Sir George Richardson presided in the absence of the Mayor. He expressed the hope that the next Empire Games would be held in Auckland in January. 1940. Other speakers were:—Mr C. H. T. Palmer, for the amateur ynehsmen; Dr Harold Pettit, for the swimmers; Mr George Bush, for the boxers; Mr Jenner Wylie, for the athletes, and Mr J. R. Draffin, for the riflemen. Mr Noel Crump, renlying for all, said that he w T as unable to guarantee that they -would he succesful, but he could guarantee that, win or lose, and on or off the field, they would behave as true New Zealanders. The athletes were warmly cheered by a large gathering. , *
