With SO runs in hand for the loss of three wickets, United were faced with the task of bettering Palmerston’s first innings score of*2ll, but United were all out for 192, thanks largely to good bowling bv Downes (7 for 40). Olliver (33) and Cocker.v (18) were the not out batsmen. Both were caught off Downes’s bowling, but not before Olliver had put on 47 runs and Cockerv 45. The former hit four fours and the latter five. Both batted quietly and made _ no attempt to force the pace, aiming at keeping their wickets intact. None of the rest of the team reached 20, Ross (12), Anderson (17) and Jewett (11 not out) being the only others to run into double figures in the continuation of the innings on Saturday. Downes, who had a bowling average of two for 18 at the end of the first day, took five more wickets for only 22 additional runs. Pritchard, none for 31 on the opening day, left the field wRh an average of one for 74. Holding a lead of 19 runs on the first innings, Palmorston entered on their second strike with a little over two hours left for plav. Robertson 123) and J. Ongley (35) put on 54 for the first wicket, but at 84 Robertson. Penden and J, Ongley had all been dismissed. Pritchard raised the score by 22 and Norris (34 not out) was going well at stumps. Entering on the afternoon’s play with the prospects all in their favour—--122 for three wickets in reply to Y.M.C.A.’s 139 —City soon consolidated their position and at 3.45 p.m. declared their innings closed with only seven wickets down for 328. City then sought an innings win, but Y.M.C.A. had only four wickets down for 188 runs when play was closed 15 minutes before full time. McVicar (71not out), added only eight more to his total in City’s unfinished innings, and was then howled by Hatch, whose final average was three for 92. Wheatley then entered on a productive strike for 88. He was still unbeaten at the declaration and had but 15 fours, attacking all the bowlers. He gave several chances, one being in the slips and another at fine leg. Three other batsmen bettered 20, and Y.M.C.A. were 189 runs in arrears when they

commenced their second innings. The first three wickets fell at 54, 66 and 103. Hastilow and Spelman were then together and, while Spelman batted more carefully than usual, Hastilow hit hard to knock up 59 runs in 25 minutes. He sent the ball away for six on four occasions and reached the boundary on 5 others, while an overthrow on a single went to the boundary to produce a five. Eventually he skied a ball from Hearsey practically straight up and Weir (the wicketkeeper) took the catch. Edlin produced 43 runs, speeding up his scorl ing toward the close of his innings. Ho hit seven fours. Spelman and Rabono opened their partnership with 39 runs required to bring Y.M.C.A.’s aggregate up to the Cit- total, and when play ended they were only one short of that objective. Details: Y.M.C.A. Having faced the very big hurdle of 394 runs and having three wickets down for 43 runs, City lost to Kia Toa by an innings and .249 runs in the senior B competition. The uncompleted first innings of City closed at 77, Shailer taking four wickets for 10. Peck took three for 22 and Piercey three for 30. Old Boys, who had lost 6 wickets for 68 runs on the first day, continued, to score 113, They then followed on to put on 238, but they were seriously handicapped by the absence of Turnbull. It was due largely to the fine performance of McNeile, who realised 58 not out, that Old Boys were able to hold their end up, Y.M.C.A., having made 270 in their first innings, required only a few runs to secure a win. They secured these for the loss of 4 wickets, and then declared. Details: Y.M.C.A. First innings 270 Second Innings. FRIENDLY MATCH. A friendly game was played between Combined Services junior A team and Cook’s junior B on the Terrace End Park. Services won. HAWKE~CUP. PLANS FOR FURTHER MATCH. NEGOTIATIONS FAIL. Efforts to arrange for a Hawke Cup challenge game at Palmerston North •on Anniversary Day (next Saturday) have ao far proved unavailing. The match was originally to bo taken up by Poverty Bay, "but that association found they were unable to send a team and the New Zealand Cricket Council accordingly offered the match to the Hawke’s Bay Association, which enjoys the same provincial holiday as Manawatu. At a meeting on Friday, however, the management committee of the Hawke’s Bay Association decided that, owing to the shortness of the notice and because also of the financial aspect, they would not be able to send a challenging team. It was also pointed out that members of the team would not have had the necessary practice for such a match: Proposals were also made that the South Auckland Cricket Association might he able to move their challenge forward to the January date instead of that at the end of February, hut such a change was not possible. The Wairarapa and Wanganui teams are to play off for the right of what was the oiie remaining challenge (before the default of the Poverty Bay Association) and it has been suggested that the elimination match may- now be dropped, although no advice of any such procedure has been received from the New Zealand Council.
