WELLINGTON MEETING.
FIRST DAY’S EVENTS. REVIEW OF FIELDS. (By “Spectator.”) The Wellington Racing Club’s tlircc-day meeting opens at Trentham tomorrow, and chief interest will centre in the Cup, in which The Buzzer will attempt to accomplish the difficult feat —achieved only four times previously—of winning both the Auckland and Wellington Cups ill the one season. Concentrate was the last to do this in 1929-30, after an interval of nearly thirty years. However, The Buzzer, who has improved even since running in the Auckland Cup, and has been gallopiiig in great stvlc, should go to the post in perfect condition, and the extra stone in weight should not stop him if he reproduces his ICllerslie form, as is anticipated. With 8.6, ho has 141 b more than lie successfully carried at Ellcrslic, and he will meet, the horses he defeated there on the following worse terms: —Argentic 111 b; Wild Chase, 151 b; G'erno Abbas, 111 b; Kelly, 211>, and Padishah, lOJlb. Under the altered terms ho is likely to have more difficulty in beating those horses, but the chances aro that ho will run very well. The Buzzer’s trainer, L. G. Alorris, has a second string with The Bigot, who is on the minimum. The Bigot failed at Marton after running third in tho Manawatu Cup, in which ho was unlucky, but his subsequent running was disappointing, and suggested _ that he will not be in his best form at Trentham where, if he could reproduce his efforts of the early spring, ho would be dangerous. His track work was not impressive on Saturday. Argentic (tho top-weight), Tiger Gain, and -Lowenberg will be making their third attempt in the Cup race. Argentic ran a closo third in tho Auckland Cup, and can bo depended upon for a very solid effort. Tiger Gain has twice won the Manawatu Cup, over tho same distance as tho Wellington Cup, and should possess excellent prospects, as he has been showing tho best form of his career, and can see the journey out. Lowenberg has 31b. less to carry than what he finished second with last year, and has been racing very consistently lately. A winner at Alanawatu and second in the Stratford Cup, he _ appears to have struck his best form again. Wild Chase was probably not at the top of his form at Ellorslie and prefers the going easy. Ho has not had a great deal of racing this year, and if ho is to reproduce his old form it should bo at Trentham, where tho track will suit him. Cerno Abbas appears to have gone off since winning the New Zealand Cup, but showed fine form at Trentham in the spring. Catalogue is quietly expected, in some quarters, to have first-class prospects, but has not shone as a stayer, and would be preferred over a shorter journey. However, he is nicely placed, and ran well in tho Manawatu Cup. Round Up won two mile and a quarter races at Ellorslie in brilliant fashion, running a course record of 2.4 on the first occasion and 2.5 with 7.11 on the second. Ho is now up to 8.1, but this should not troublo him and, though tho Cup distance will be the longest ho has attempted, he hae given every indication that he will slay on over tho additional two furlongs. His recent form suggests that he must possess a great chance. • *
Kelly ran two fine races at Ellcrslic for fourth in the Auckland Cup and second in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Compared with the weights carried in tho Auckland Cup, the figures do not favour Kelly, but at 7.13 he has the same weight as he carried in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, which was run over the same distance as the Wellington Cup. Padishah did not fulfil expectations at Auckland, but he began slowly, and was slightly sore on two days, while the reverse way of going might not have assisted him. He is a genuine stayer,: and finished brilliantly over the last half-mile to fill third place in the Grandstand Handicap at Ellorslie. Siegmtind won three races at Manawatu, but appeared to have had enough at Marton and, unless he has since freshened up, would not appeal. Sunee’s latest form has not been good. Lucullus Lad is the likeliest lightweight to bring off a surprise. I-Ic completely bowled over a good field to score easily at Woodvillo, including Tho Buzzer, who subsequently won tho Auckland Cup, and is now carrying 81b lose than the weight with which he won tho Wairarapa Cup (lz miles). Lucullus Lad is a greatly improved horse, and his early speed may be the undoing of the opposition. He has shown that ho can make tho jiacc and stay. THE SPRINT. There arc seven acceptors for tho Telegraph Handicap, and Paper Slipper’s brilliancy as a sprinter deservedly makes him topweight, but he will find it extremely difficult to concede a stone to Laughing Laos, who ran third in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riecarton, won twice at Awapuni during the holidays, and has since improved greatly. She should take-a lot of beating. Grey Honour runs well at Trentham, and has been showing good track form, while both Pakanui and Lady Ina raced well during the holidays. Most improvement can bo expected from the latter, who finishes strongly. Top Row has done well in the south, and is well fancied by his connections. Alunga is a much improved horse of late, having won in four out' of his last five starts, and might go well in open company. Ho likes a little room. Horses which may be well supported are as follow: — Trentham Highweight.—Royal Choice, Convivial, Conveyor. , Wellington Stakes.—To Hero, Amigo, Surmount.
