DANGER OF ROPES.
STRESSED BY CORONER. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Jan. 17. “I would like to add as a rider that local bodies be urged to secure the removal of such ropes and take steps to prevent other ropes being put up, as it appears that they constitute a danger to strangers using them to dive into the river,” said Mr S. I/. Paterson, S.M., the Coroner, when returning a verdict at the inquest today into the death of Andrew Kenneth McMillan, of Dannevirke, who died on Saturday night from spinal injuries received through diving from a rope into the Waikato River on Friday. Deceased's companion said that neither he nor his companion were familiar with the river, hut he had stood in the water to show deceased what depth it was. It was 4ft.. deep. He did not think deceased had been reckless- or foolhardy. There was ample water for diving and it seemed to he purely an unhappy mischance that had led to the accident. The medical evidence showed that deceased’s condition had been hopeless from the time of his admission. The axis of the neck had been fractured.
