THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 17, 1908. A very heavy frost, which had done extensive damage to gardens, had been experienced in Palmerston North. In two years the rate of farm wages in New Zealand had risen from between 15s and £1 per week to between 25s and 30s a week. At a special meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council the preliminary steps had been taken towards the taking--over of Morris Street. A public meeting had been calle.d to discuss the advisability of constructing swimming baths in the town. A fire had been raging from end to end on both sides of the Manawatu Gorge. The road had been impassable and parties of Woodviile and Ashhurst residents had been ready to go out and fight the flames if necessary. The Palmerston North Borough Council had been urged to allot numbers to the houses in the town. Moloch had been the winner of the Wellington Cup. He had paid a splendid price.
