WORK AT TRENTHAM. A BUSY MORNING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, _ Jan. 17. With practically all the visiting horses on (ho scene, the Trentham tracks were a hivo of activity for an hour after work had commenced this morning, but most of the galloping was confined to short sprints and much of the work was only of an easy or pacing nature. The weather was fine, with mist again down on the course. Tho outside of the course proper and tho plough were open, fast galloping mainly being done on the .former. Amigo and Icing ran half a mile on tho course well within themselves in 50 2-sscc. Laughing Lass took 49scc and r lhc Bigot 50 3-seec. Alby beat Vadarve by half a length in 49soe. Dissipation just shaded Cricket in 49 l-ssce, Tho best half-mile was recorded by Dictate, who was going well in beating Rockingham by a length, with Draeula wolj away in 48 2-ssoc. Pakanui also pleased in registering 48 4-sscc. Arvakur, who appeared to have a bit in hand, beat Prediction in 48 4-ssec. Mishna was half a length in front pi Prime Quality after running half a mile in 49 l-ssee. " Salient Knight, after a slow beginning, took 49 4-sscc. Dunnanway and Pekoe required 50 4-ssec over a longer distance. Ccrne Abbas, clear early, was just in front of Kelly at tho end of seven furlongs in 1.31, (he last half mile taking 51sec. Kelly is to be ridden in the Cup by R. McTavish. Debham and Accomplice ran six furlongs in 1.16 3-5, the last half milo taking 50 2-ssec. Love Lilt was soveral lengths in front of Amoroso at the end of six furlongs in 1.19. Linguist, doing it easily, took 1.17 3-5, the last half-milo in 51 2-ssec. On the plough Wild Chase ran seven furlongs in 1.32. Argentic slipped easily away from Paper Slipper at the end of the same distance in 1.29 -3-5, tiro last half-mile taking 51sec. Rabble was a neck in front of Galteemorc- after running six furlongs in 1.16, tho last half-milo taking 50 l-ssoc. Roy Bun beat Lustre by a neck with Siegmund some lengths behind after a good six furlongs in 1.15, the last half-milo in 50sec. Ben Braggio did tho last half-mile of five furlongs in 50sec and Stridley Rogue took 515 CC. No scratching have been made for the first day up till now, but Haupongi will not be starting in the Highweight. ASHHURST RACES. MEETING ON SATURDAY. With good fields of horses engaged, it is anticipated that the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday next (Anniversary Day), will be the most successful fixture yet held by tho club. This is a very popular holiday meeting in tho Manawatu district, and a number of improvements have been carried out to tho course appointments, while an additional parking area for cars from Hawke’s Bay and the Wairarapa has been provided. TROTTING NOTES. MANAWATU CLUB. (By “Square-Gaiter.”) The committee of the Manawatu Trotting Club met on Saturday evening, when tho programme for the meeting to be held on April 2 was decided upon. Stakes totalling £I4OO wore allocated, being an increase of £4OO over the corresponding fixture for last year. The Manawatu Cup will carry £3OO. tho McDonald Plandicap (for trotters) £3OO, the President’s Handicap (li miles) £2OO, the Pohangina Handicap (slow two miles) £l6O, the Stewards’ Plandicap (li miles) £l5O, and there will bo three maiden races for trotters and pacers, the minimum stake offered being £l3O. 'The Manawatu Cup limit has been tightened from 4.45 to 4.42, the President’s Handicap from 2.56 to 2.52, and the McDonald Handicap from 5.0 to 4.56. The limit for the Pohangina Handicap will bo 4.42. and for tho Stewards’ Handicap, 2.59. Mr A. H. Manson (secretary of tho Manawatu Trotting Club) has been appointed handicapper for the trotting events at the Feilding A. and P. Show and the Oroua Downs sports. NELSON TROTTING CLUB.
