COST OF LIVING
STILL LOWER THAN 1929. WORKERS’ WAGES HIGHER. POSITION IN BRITAIN. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received January 15, 10.5 a.m. RUGBY, Jan. 14. The Heme Secretary, Sir John Simon. in a speech at Swansea, discussing the rise in the cost of living in Britain, stressed the fact that the cost of living was still 4 per cent, lower than in 1929. Sir John said that the rates of wages were 4 per cent, higher than during that year. Wage increases, affecting about 850,000 workers, estimated to represent in the aggregate some £4,000.000, were awarded at the annual review of the National Joint Council of the building industry.
