TANKER ATTACKED

TURKEY ANNOYED. NATIONAL WATERS USED. SPANISH WAR INCIDENT. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 21, 11.55 a.m. CONSTANZA, Aug. 20.

After a series of attacks in the Aegean Sea, the crew of the British tanker Mirian, which was laden with petrol for the Spanish Government, refused’to leave harbour.

The President, Kemal Ataturk, and his Ministers abandoned the Army manoeuvres in Eastern Thrace and hastened hither. They consider that mysterious submarines are shelling vessels in Turkish waters.

Meanwhile, bignor Begonia, Spanish Charge d’Affaires, warns Vaienciabouiiu vessels from South Russia not to venture outside the Dardanelles. It is believed here that the Aegean submarine activities are being conducted under the aegis of Italy, which, if not actually furnishing the submarines, has provided one of the Dodecanese Islands (north-east of Crete) as a base. INSURGENT ACTIVITY.

SUCCESSES IN THE NORTH. SALAMANCA, Aug. 20. It is officially estimated that 10,000 Government supporters were cut off and have been captured or killed in the south of the Santander Province. Thousands of prisoners have been placed in concentration camps. Insurgents are surprised at the completeness of the collapse, a.nd are driving their advantage home. A Barcelona communique states that the insurgents occupied two villages on the Santander front, but the Government troops recovered several positions in the lleinosa Valley. A Bilbao message says rain and low clouds impeded aviation on the Santander front. The insurgents took advantage of a lull in the Reinosa sector to clean up a pocket between two roads in which seven Governments battalions are reported to have been cut off. Some of the enemy put up a fight, others surrendering without resistance. The French Consul and 18 Frenchmen and eight Belgians, who have arrived at St. Jean de Luz from Santander, state that the capture of Santander is considered inevitable, and the popqlace is intensely pessimistic.
