SHANNON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Aug. 19. Superintendent W. Radford presided at the annual meeting of the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade. The report slated that the membership stood at eight. The brigade was very unfortunate in losing the services of Superintendent H.- Murray, who had moved from itic town. Two members had gained their fiveyear service medals. Thanks were extended to the Levin Fire Brigade for visiting Shannon and giving instruction to mem-

bers, who had benefited both in theory and practice. Hose was. urgently required and next year the fire engine might have to bo dispensed with. The. brigade had a credit balance of £5, which was inadequate to meet requirements. The Borough Council’s grant was very helpful, but it only covered running expenses and did not allow anything ‘ for equipment. Members had made efforts to raise funds but sup'port had not been forthcoming from the public. It was resolved to call a public meeting, when the brigade’s financial position will be discussed, Mr W. Radford, junr., was elected .superintendent; Mr G. Wishart, deputy-superintendent; Mr V. Richards, secretary; and Mr J. T. Bovie, auditor.

There was a large al tendance at the August meeting of the Shannon Women’s

Institute to meet Miss M. Grant, president of the North Wellington Federation, and to hear an account of her trip to Washington last year. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Three new members were elected and welcomed to the meeting. A competition, “Guessing the combined weight of the committee,” was won by Mrs Pettit, and the best bloom for the month was brought by Mrs C. Stern, with Miss N. Easton second and Mrs WaringT'ayloi third.

On Thursday afternoon Mrs C. M. Cronquest entertained a number of friends at afternoon lea, when occasion was taken to say goodbye to Mrs McDonald, who leaves shortly for Wellington. Mrs Braun was the winner of a pencil competition, and a dainty gift in a, “postal parcel” went to the guest of honour. Musical

items were rendered by Mcsdames Cronquest, S. Barber, and Lind. Mr McKinley, chirk at the railway station, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to Wellington. Mr J. Telfcr, of the railway staff, and Mrs Telfcr, are on holiday in Invercargill. > Mrs C. Easton, on whom was conferred the honour of a Coronation Medal, has now received her decoration. About 60 Guides, committee members and parents gathered at the Parish Hall to celebrate the Guides’ eighth birthday. Following a sumptuous tea enjoyed by all Miss Picard (acting-captain) thanked the committee and friends who had provided' the party, and Mrs C. Easton (president) for the beautiful birthday cake. Mrs Easton stated that she was sorry that the late captain (Mrs S. James, Palmerston

North) was unable to be present, but impressed upon all that they must not forgot the many years of good work she had done with the troop. The thanks of all were due to Miss Picard for stepping into the vacancy and giving so much of her time to the work. Posies were handed to Mies Picard from the committee and the Guides, and on behalf of the parents, Mrs Lcng-Ward expressed thanks for the invitation to he present.
