Received August 20, 9.30 a.m. PORTSMOUTH, Aug. 19. The New Zealand cricketers beat the United Services by nine wickets. On an improved wicket there was more spirited batting. The United Services at lunch had put on 115 for the loss of three wickets, hut after lunch Weir took a wicket in the first over, Cowie yorked Robins and Cole and was assisted by fine catches by Donnelly at second slip. The fast bowler’s alter-lunch figures were six overs, two maidens, seventeen runs, five wickets—a surprisingly low total of runs considering it was a batsman’s wicket.
Musson yesterday fractured two fingers when fielding a drive by Donnelly, and Roberts badly bruised a finger and may not play for a week, .noth took no part in the game to-day. Kerr and Vivian made a spirited opening, the former driving with delightful freedom. He hit four fours and a six and was unlucky to be caught behind the wickets. The partnership added 99 runs in 50 minutes. Vivian made brilliant square cuts, his score including one six and six fours. , . Carson was strong on the leg sale.
