Mr Stanley Beckingsale has been appointed actuary for the Nationa. Provident Fund, according to a notice published in last night’s Gazette. Dr. F. T. Bowerbank is to leave Wellington to-day to attend the Australian and New Zealand Medical Congress as president of the Army, Navy and Air Force section. ■He will later proceed to England, and will return to New Zealand in January.

Mr Arthur Frank Bell has been appointed manufacturers’ representative on the Tobacco Board to replace Mr Kenneth Alexander .Snedden, who resigned, according to a Gazette notice last night. Other members of the board have been reappointed for a further term.

Mr H. M. Peirson, formerly recording officer for the Waikato_ Pig Recording Club and recently information officer for the New Zealand Co-opera-tive Pig Marketing Association, has been appointed extension officer in pig husbandry at the Ruakura E arm of Instruction. •

Constable W. R. Evans, who has been stationed at Palmerston North since June, 1928, lias received advicei of his impending transfer to Devonport. Constable Evans came to Palmerston North from the Police Training Depot, and has been a popular member of the Force here. A Press Association message from Otaki states that the death ocurred this morning of Mr James Poole Brandon. For a considerable time he had been Mayor of Otaki. Mr Brandon had also been the manager,of the old Colonial Bank of New Zealand, both at Masterton and Palmerston North. He had had a long illness, and in passing leaves a grown-up family. Tlie death occurred suddenly in Wellington yesterday of Mr John Francis O’Leary, chief clerk of the State Advances Corporation. Mr O’Leary was born in the Taiieri, Otago, 54 years ago. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School, Dunedin, and joined the State Advances Office as a cadet. His record of service dn the depart ment covered a period of 36 years ami his career was an exemplary one, culminating in his appointment to tilt position he held at the time of his death.

Rev. P. Selwyn Abraham, vicar of Romford, Essex, has been appointed assistant Bishop of Newfoundland, with the right of succession. Mr Abraham was elected to tho general committee of the Melanesian Mission (London) last year.. He is the son of Bishop Abraham, an old and valued friend ol the mission, and grandson of Bishop Abraham, friend of Bishop Selwyn, and co-worker 'in New Zealand. The second Bishop Abraham mentioned above was an uncle of Messrs R. S. and L. A. Abraham.

News has been received from London of tlie death of August 16 of Mr Ralph Brown, well-known in stock and station agent circles as late manager of the wool department of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd. Mr Brown was born in Hertfordshire, England, and educated in England. On the outbreak of the Great War lie joined an English artillery unit as a gunner at the age of 17. He served through the War on Gallipoli and the French front up to the armistice, and afterward with the Army of Occupation in Germany. He rose from the rank of gunner to that of captain,and' was decorated in France with the Military Cross. After the War he came to New Zealand and joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Ltd., making a special study of wool. Leaving that firm, he went into business on his own account in Gisborne, later joining the stuff of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd. About 10 years ago he married the daughter of Mr and Mrs W. R. Kirker, of Wellington, and went to reside in Wanganui, leaving there last December to go to England. Mr Brown leaves a widow, but no children.
