WINTER CRICKET SCHOOL.
INTERESTING ADDRESS. This season, the Winter Cricket School is sponsoring a series of blackboard lectures on various aspects of the game. The first of these lectures was given this week, the lecturer being Mr G. Wheatley, the Australian coach, who took as his subject, “The Finer Points of Cricket.”
Mr Wheatley dealt mainly with the placing of fields for various types of bowlers, and, by means of diagrams, fully explained his reasons for the placing of such fields. He next touched upon other vital points, such as running between the wickets, backing up in the field, and the ways in which intelligent fieldsmen can assist their captain and the howler. Mr Wheatley’s lecture was listened to by quite a large number of enthusiasts, wlio accorded the lecturer a hearty vote of thanks at its conclusion. Mr Wheatley afterwards was kept busy answering questions and explaining various points to interested members. Another lecture will be delivered by Mr Wheatley at a later date. On this occasion he will pay special attention to points m batsmanship. Tho school intends to hold a series of these lectures during its season, and the next one to be delivered will be advertised in the “Standard” next Monday. The school hopes, by providing this service for local cricketers, to take advantage of another method, apart from the practice and tuition, by which it can benefit local cricket.
